With reference to the Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP) in India, consider the following statements: 1. Ethanol production from rice and maize is significantly more water-intensive than sugarcane-based ethanol production. 2. Expansion of ethanol blending in India may lead to a shift in cropping patterns, potentially affecting food security. 3. India has already achieved the target of 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol ahead of its original deadline. 4. NITI Aayog has indicated that large-scale ethanol production can aggravate groundwater depletion, especially in water-stressed regions. 5.In the long term, increasing ethanol blending targets is not expected to substantially alter India’s overall irrigation water demand due to improvements in crop productivity and diversification of feedstock sources. 6. Ethanol blending, by reducing vehicular emissions, will necessarily lead to a net reduction in India’s overall greenhouse gas emissions irrespective of the source of feedstock.
