| 3 |  The table illustrates the changes in the proportion of people engaging in seven types of sports in a European country over a 10-year time-frame, specifically in 1999, 2004 and 2009.
Overall, football and basketball saw their shares shrinking throughout, although the former held the top position. Conversely, the other sports experienced increases of varying degrees, with golf participation rates enjoying the most pronounced growth of all.
Focusing on the sports that declined in popularity, football was by far the most popular activity at 57%, the highest figure recorded on the table. However, this percentage slipped to 52% in 2004 and then to 48% in the final year, representing an overall decrease of 9 percentage points from the beginning of the period. Basketball, by comparison, started at a much lower share of 26%, a figure that then edged down to 25% and closed the period at 24%.
The other sports saw increases in participation levels. Swimming, the second most played activity, started the period at 32% and edged up to 34% in 2004 before leveling off at this figure in 2009. Tennis stood at 25%, trailing swimming by 7 percentage points in the initial year. This percentage climbed consistently to reach 33%, ending almost level with swimming. Meanwhile, volleyball followed an uneven pattern, as its figure initially grew from 17% to 20% before dropping back to 18%, the smallest rise of all.
Yoga and golf were among the least popular sports. The proportion of golf participants rose steadily from 8% to 17%. Yoga, by contrast, remained at 10% until 2004 before climbing to 13%, which made it the least popular sport from 2004 onwards.

Overall, physical inactivity rose steadily with age, with the oldest age group recording the highest figures and the youngest the lowest. In addition, the share of inactive females was consistently higher than that of males in every age category, by a margin of 5 to 7 points.
With respect to the younger age groups, 12% of men aged 18-24 did not engage in any exercise, as opposed to 18% of their female counterparts. By comparison, the gap between men and women aged 25-34 stood at 5 percentage points, with females (27%) exhibiting a clear lead over males (22%). As for the 35-44 age bracket, the percentage of men not exercising was 27%, 5 points lower than the corresponding figure for women (32%).
A similar picture was observed in the remaining age brackets. Males aged 45-54 trailed females, at 33% and 38% respectively. A wider gap of 7 percentage points emerged in the senior age cohort, with 36% of men and 43% of women reporting no exercise, the highest proportions for each gender.
