EMKAY ON UPI MDR POSITIVE FOR PAYTM & PINE LABS • NPCI introduces 0.4% MDR on P2M UPI transactions above ₹2,000, effective 15 October 2026 • Emkay expects MDR sharing of around 16 bps to issuing banks, 12 bps to apps and 12 bps to acquiring banks. • Estimates incremental FY28 MDR revenue of around ₹1,200 Cr for Paytm and ₹150 Cr for Pine Labs. • Around 67% of P2M UPI GMV is above ₹2,000, though exemptions will reduce the effective addressable pool. • For Paytm, Emkay conservatively assumes only 40% of UPI transactions qualify for ~10 bps net MDR after bank sharing. • Transactions of ₹75,000+ will have MDR capped at ₹300 per transaction. • Railways, telecom, insurance, fuel and agricultural-input transactions above ₹2,000 will attract a ₹5 flat MDR; these sectors account for ~46% of P2M UPI transaction value. • Mutual funds, securities and stockbroking/dealer payments will attract 0.02% MDR, capped at ₹300. • Small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh/month via UPI QR under P2PM will continue to have zero MDR. • Emkay expects initial competition for the new profit pool, but believes Paytm’s large feet-on-street network should help defend market share.
