Essay Essay is one paper where relatively small improvements can lead to significant jumps in marks. One thing that helped me throughout preparation was maintaining a repository of: Quotes Poems Stories Anecdotes That being said, I do not think flowery language is necessary. What matters is: Flow Coherence Easy readability Relevance A beautifully written essay with weak content will not score well. Similarly, a fact-heavy essay without flow also struggles. In my opinion, the biggest game changer in Essay is topic selection. Do not rush this process. In the initial reading time, carefully evaluate all four topics in Part A and choose the one where you can naturally generate diverse dimensions, examples and arguments. Once the topic is selected: Spend around 15 minutes developing a structure. Think about the introduction and conclusion. Identify major dimensions and transitions. Only after that start writing. My rough timeline was: First 5 minutes – choose the topic. Next 15 minutes – develop structure, introduction and conclusion. Around 1 hour 15 minutes – write the essay. Then repeat the same process for the second essay: Take another 15–20 minutes. Choose the topic carefully. Develop a proper structure before writing. I used the question paper itself for making rough structures and mind maps. If I find my old templates, I will share them. They were essentially flowcharts that helped me visualise the essay before writing it. Another thing I consciously tried to do was ensure that both essays did not look too similar. For example: If the first essay started with a story, I would begin the second with a quote or a poem. If the first was philosophical in tone, I would make the second more analytical. If the first relied heavily on anecdotes, I would use more examples and arguments in the second. This creates variety and prevents both essays from appearing like copies of each other. One major mistake many aspirants make is not practising enough for Essay. What helped me was studying topper copies. Some examples are: Vikram Grewal Mehak Jain Also look for recent topper copies because essay trends keep evolving. How to utilise topper copies Do not read them passively. Instead: Take the essay topic as a mock test. Create your own structure. Write your own essay. Only then read what the topper has written. This allows you to compare thought processes rather than merely admiring the final product. One thing that worked surprisingly well for me was replicating the ABCDEF approach that I used in Ethics. The same repository can be used here: Bureaucratic examples Corporate examples Historical personalities Contemporary personalities National examples International examples The overlap between Ethics and Essay preparation is much larger than most aspirants realise. The same stories, examples, anecdotes, quotes and case studies can often enrich both papers. Ultimately, Essay is not a test of ornamental language. It is a test of structured thinking, balanced arguments, multidimensional analysis and effective communication.

Ethics (GS-4) Ethics can be a game changer for almost everyone. You will notice that the marks range in this paper is huge, and it can genuinely make or break an attempt. In 2024, I scored around 95 marks. In 2025, I consciously worked on multiple aspects of Ethics and eventually scored 120. What I did Peeyush Sir’s Ethics Course Peeyush Sir’s Ethics Enrichment Programme Collected examples regularly from newspapers One thing I realised is that ethics is not something we lack in life. Sabke andar bachpan se koot koot ke bhare hain. Most of us already have a huge repository of ethical examples, stories and personalities in our minds. The challenge is connecting them with the keyword in the question and recalling them naturally in the exam. A simple exercise that helped me was to take a blank sheet of paper, write a keyword such as integrity, empathy, courage, compassion or leadership, and then note down everything I already knew related to that keyword. The benefit is that you start creating natural associations rather than cramming examples. For instance, when thinking about ethics, examples from Bhishma, Karna, Arjuna’s unwavering focus, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, historical kings and queens, freedom fighters and contemporary administrators would naturally come to mind. Over time, these examples become easy to recall and deploy in answers. Value Addition: Make the Paper Your USP Do not make your Ethics paper look like a photocopy of coaching material. It should reflect your personality, thinking and strengths. Again, I used my own strengths here: Kabir’s Dohas Rahim’s Dohas Two or three quotes related to almost every major keyword (ChatGPT can help here) One Unique Thing That I Did: The ABCDEF Approach For every alphabet, I maintained examples from different domains: Good and bad bureaucratic examples Good and bad corporate examples (Indian and global) Good and bad personalities outside bureaucracy and business This ensured: Freshness in answers Diverse examples Better recall Answers that stood out from the crowd Finding Unique Ethics Keywords Another useful exercise is to collect unique ethics keywords and concepts. I received immense help in this regard from Aman Sir (ForumIAS Mentor). One useful resource is: Ethics Unwrapped – Ethics Defined Use it liberally for discovering new concepts, frameworks and ethical vocabulary. Paper Attempting Strategy A common concern is: “Ethics is very lengthy. How should one attempt the paper?” Completing the paper is important. However, merely completing it is not enough. You need both quantity and quality. The objective is to write sufficient as well as relevant content. During the 5-minute reading time, I would either solve 4–5 direct questions mentally from the beginning or quickly solve two case studies on the question paper itself. As soon as the exam started, I completed those first and then attempted the remaining paper in serial order. Time management is a major challenge in Ethics. The only reliable solution is: Practice Practice Practice For this, I relied on: Peeyush Sir’s Test Series Ethics MIG by Vikas Dhayal Quote-Based Questions For quote-based questions, I followed: Mehak Jain Ma’am’s Telegram channel Anshul Bhatt Sir’s Telegram channel Do not go too deep. The objective is simply to understand the broad meaning, learn a few approaches and collect some value addition. Beyond that, focus on answer writing and application rather than accumulating more material. Ethics rewards originality, sincerity and practical wisdom far more than the ability to reproduce coaching notes.
