State-wise Poverty in India: A Policy Perspective The latest state-wise multidimensional poverty data based on NFHS-5 (2019–21) highlights a critical reality: poverty in India is highly uneven across regions. With the national average multidimensional poverty rate at 14.96%, states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh continue to face significantly higher poverty levels, while several southern and northeastern states perform considerably better.

CSR is growing. But are we putting the money where the need is greatest?. Bihar received around ₹35 per person, while Delhi received nearly ₹1,243. That is not just a funding gap but it is a question of priorities. The intent of CSR was never simply to spend where it is easiest to execute, measure and report. If CSR follows corporate presence, convenience and visibility, we may keep strengthening places that already have stronger systems. The real opportunity is to take capital where public resources are stretched, communities are underserved and every rupee can create greater additional impact. Maybe the next evolution of CSR should be “Need-led CSR” rather than “Presence-led CSR.” Better data, district level need mapping and smarter collaboration with government can help companies move beyond compliance towards genuine development impact.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has approved a repayment plan for Zee Group founder Subhash Chandra, allowing creditors to receive around Rs 6.5 crore against admitted claims of Rs 22,006.57 crore. This means, the lenders will face a haircut of nearly 99.97 per cent. Put simply, creditors would recover only about three paise for every Rs 100 they are owed.

The US federal debt is $40 trillion, and the annual interest burden is $1 trillion. This puts upward pressure on interest rates all over the world. War-induced inflation, made worse by tariffs, adds further pressure. India government's interest payment obligation is already whopping 40% of revenue receipts (i.e. tax revenue plus RBI dividend). Interest cost is ₹ 15 trillion, and will rise. This huge burden must be covered either by cutting expenses (esp. on health, education, public services, or making UPI unfree) or by raising more taxes. Reducing public services and allowing health and education to crumble ends up hurting the poor much more. The state of higher education, and NITI Aayog's recent report on jobless youth is a grim confirmation. There are nearly a million unfilled vacancies in the central government alone (sanctioned but not filled). That too is partly because of fund crunch. Many schools have had to shut down, and university positions lie vacant.
