Repost from Anthropology-Minds Of Aspirants
📚 Irawati Karve (1905–1970) – (Anthropology Optional)
1️⃣ Background & Education
India’s first woman anthropologist
Born in Burma,
educated in Pune
BA (Honours) in Philosophy (Sociology major) – Fergusson College
MA in Sociology – Bombay University under G.S. Ghurye
Doctoral training in Germany (Kaiser Wilhelm Institute)
PhD (1930, Berlin University) under Eugen Fischer
Doctoral work: Normal Asymmetry of the Human Skull and Bones
2️⃣ Intellectual Influences
Karve’s work reflects a synthesis of four traditions:
Indological tradition → Sanskrit texts, myths, epics
Ethnological tradition → Surveys of castes and tribes
German physical anthropology → Anthropometry, biological data
Fieldwork orientation → Socio-economic and cultural studies
⚠️ Though trained under Eugen Fischer, she did not imbibe racial determinism.
3️⃣ Methodological Approach
Used ancient Sanskrit texts to interpret contemporary Indian society
Supplemented Indological insights with:
Anthropometric data
Biological markers (eye colour, blood groups, etc.)
Differed from Louis Dumont:
No attempt to build abstract structural models
Focused on empirical + textual triangulation
4️⃣ Academic Career

Faculty at Deccan College, Pune (from 1939 till retirement)
Head, Dept. of Sociology & Anthropology
