📚 Irawati Karve (1905–1970) – (Anthropology Optional) 1️⃣ Background & Education India’s first woman anthropologist Born in Burma, educated in Pune BA (Honours) in Philosophy (Sociology major) – Fergusson College MA in Sociology – Bombay University under G.S. Ghurye Doctoral training in Germany (Kaiser Wilhelm Institute) PhD (1930, Berlin University) under Eugen Fischer Doctoral work: Normal Asymmetry of the Human Skull and Bones 2️⃣ Intellectual Influences Karve’s work reflects a synthesis of four traditions: Indological tradition → Sanskrit texts, myths, epics Ethnological tradition → Surveys of castes and tribes German physical anthropology → Anthropometry, biological data Fieldwork orientation → Socio-economic and cultural studies ⚠️ Though trained under Eugen Fischer, she did not imbibe racial determinism. 3️⃣ Methodological Approach Used ancient Sanskrit texts to interpret contemporary Indian society Supplemented Indological insights with: Anthropometric data Biological markers (eye colour, blood groups, etc.) Differed from Louis Dumont: No attempt to build abstract structural models Focused on empirical + textual triangulation 4️⃣ Academic Career Administrator & teacher at SNDT Women’s University (1931–36) Faculty at Deccan College, Pune (from 1939 till retirement) Head, Dept. of Sociology & Anthropology Vice-Chancellor, SNDT (for a period) Collaborated with: University of London (SOAS) Rockefeller Foundation (USA) 5️⃣ Major Contributions & Works Kinship Organization in India Hindu Society: An Interpretation The Chitpavan Brahmans – An Ethnic Study Maharashtra – Land and People Yuganta: The End of an Epoch 📌 The Chitpavan Brahmans → Classic example of physical anthropology + Indology
