i think there is something fundamentally wrong with me, at every level of my being: mentally, physically, emotionally, and the unknown presence that others call “a soul”. that the mechanics are disturbed throughout, showers of sparks bursting out from my joints, thick ring of smoke that winds its way around my heart, an incessant hum that vibrates through my brain and makes all my nerves shudder and throb— i am not right, and that fact comforts more than it bothers, a further symptom of cellular madness. when alone, i build visions of smoldering fields, smoke that clings to the horizon, blistering heat that comes in hysterical flashes— roads the stretch on for miles without a car or human in sight, pockmarked and slick with fluids both natural and artificial; veins and roots that sprout from the earth and reclaim the collapsed buildings that desecrate valleys and gulleys. when my heart gasps and i grab a blade, or heat a metal hanger, and leave a scar on my flesh to memorialize the moment. i snap at the air around me like a rabid dog. i drag my fingernails over my thighs. and then,— the violent twist that is reality snaps me into focus and brings me back to the actual world. i tilt my head and smile, i nod, i make polite conversation. but inside, i feel that ugliness i hold so dear building up; roaches of illness, born of both body and mind, slowly creeping along my inner walls. a reminder: you are sick, you are wrong.
