This volume brings together Jorjani’s recent essays on the Occult. These essays include groundbreaking philosophical contributions to understanding the intersection of Quantum Physics, Information Theory, and Parapsychology with a view to the entire spectrum of sentience from plant and animal psi to the nature of Artificial Intelligence. Lovecraft and the comics of Jack Kirby to films such as Orpheus, TRON, Videodrome, Ghostbusters, X-Men, Star Trek, Star Wars, and The Shining. One recurring theme is the relationship between the Occult and Intelligence, from the days of John Dee and Aleister Crowley to the era of L. Ron Hubbard and MK-Ultra. In this regard there are also some startling revelations about hidden aspects of the biography of Nikola Tesla.
What emerges through these essays is a dangerously counter-traditional and archeo-futuristic understanding of the Occult. Why do intelligent, reasonable people act so differently in a crowd?
The answer given in Gustave Le Bon’s 1895 classic, The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind, is that when individuals merge into a collective, their rational minds recede. In this state of anonymity, personal accountability vanishes, and what rushes in to fill the void is impulsive emotion, heightened suggestibility, and a shared collective mind. Coming amid the wave of skepticism toward human rationality in the fin de siècle, Le Bon’s masterwork became a foundational text in social psychology, influencing figures as various as Freud, Bernays, and Hitler.
