Durante décadas, los científicos han buscado señales de vida más allá de la Tierra. Aunque Marte sigue siendo uno de los principales objetivos, una de las posibilidades más prometedoras se encuentra mucho más lejos: Europa, una de las lunas de Júpiter.
Europa está cubierta por una gruesa capa de hielo que puede alcanzar varios kilómetros de espesor. Sin embargo, las observaciones realizadas por sondas espaciales indican que bajo esa superficie helada existe un inmenso océano de agua líquida. Este océano podría contener más agua que todos los océanos de la Tierra juntos.
Los investigadores creen que el calor necesario para mantener el agua en estado líquido proviene de las intensas fuerzas gravitacionales ejercidas por Júpiter. Este proceso, conocido como calentamiento por marea, genera fricción en el interior de la luna y evita que el océano se congele por completo.
Para que exista vida, generalmente se consideran tres ingredientes fundamentales: agua líquida, una fuente de energía y elementos químicos esenciales. Europa parece reunir estas condiciones, lo que la convierte en uno de los lugares más interesantes del Sistema Solar para la búsqueda de organismos microscópicos.
En los próximos años, nuevas misiones espaciales estudiarán esta luna con mayor detalle. Los instrumentos científicos analizarán su superficie, medirán el grosor del hielo y buscarán evidencias de compuestos orgánicos. Aunque todavía no existe una prueba de que haya vida en Europa, cada nuevo descubrimiento acerca a la humanidad a responder una de las preguntas más importantes de la ciencia: ¿estamos realmente solos en el universo? | 1 |
