The Jammu & Kashmir government has launched the Digital Tree Aadhaar Programme to conserve Chinar trees and create a comprehensive database to address threats from rapid urbanization.
✔️ Features of the Chinar Tree:
💫A large deciduous tree with a spreading canopy, height up to 30 meters, and girth of 10-15 meters.
💫Also known as the Oriental plane tree or maple tree (locally: Boueen).
💫The oldest recorded Chinar tree (~700 years) is in Chattergam, Budgam district, believed to have been planted by Sufi saint Syed Qasim Shah.
💫Takes 30-50 years to mature and up to 150 years to reach full size.
✔️ Habitat of Chinar Trees:
💫Found in the Eastern Himalayas.
💫Thrive in cool climates with ample water availability.
✔️Uniqueness of Chinar Trees:
Renowned for their seasonal transformation: leaves turn from deep green in summer to vibrant red, amber, and yellow in autumn.
✔️ Uses of the Chinar Tree:
💫 Medicinal: Leaves and bark used in traditional medicine.
💫 Wood: Durable, used for fine furniture.
💫 Dyes: Twigs and roots used for dyeing.
✔️ Key Facts About Geotagging:
Geotagging monitors and conserves Chinar trees.
Aims to maintain a database for better conservation and combat urban threats.
