What is India’s Policy on Urea Production?: The Union Cabinet has approved the National Investment Policy for Urea (NIPU)-2026 to boost domestic urea production, reduce import dependence, and strengthen fertilizer security amid global supply uncertainties. The policy encourages investment in gas-based urea manufacturing plants by introducing transparent fixed and variable cost structures, a 12–16% Return on Equity (RoE), and measures to reduce foreign exchange risk. India’s urea policy has evolved since 2012, leading to the establishment of six new urea plants and increasing domestic production from 225 LMT (2014–15) to over 314 LMT (2023–24). Despite higher production, India continues to import urea due to demand exceeding domestic supply, making self-reliance a key objective of the new policy. Fertilizer subsidies remain substantial, with ₹2.17 lakh crore allocated in 2025–26, of which ₹1.42 lakh crore is for urea, highlighting the fiscal burden of supporting affordable fertilizers. Subsidised urea is distributed through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system using Point of Sale (PoS) devices and Aadhaar/KCC/Voter ID-based authentication to improve transparency.

Why has India moved to take down BitChat repositories?: BitChat is a decentralised Bluetooth mesh messaging app developed by Jack Dorsey that enables communication without internet, servers, phone numbers, or centralised control. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) directed GitHub to remove BitChat repositories, arguing that the platform can be used to coordinate unlawful activities and bypass lawful restrictions during sensitive situations. Authorities contend that BitChat’s anonymous and decentralised architecture makes lawful interception, attribution, and investigation by law-enforcement agencies extremely difficult. The government fears the platform could be misused for unlawful assemblies, violent protests, misinformation, radicalisation, organised crime, and activities affecting public order and national security. The order was issued under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which allows action against intermediaries hosting material linked to unlawful acts, though blocking powers are usually exercised under Section 69A of the IT Act. Critics, including the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), argue that the order targets a technology based on its potential misuse, rather than any specific unlawful content hosted on the repositories. The criticism also cites the Supreme Court’s Anuradha Bhasin (2020) judgment, which held that restrictions on communication must satisfy the principles of necessity, proportionality, and limited scope, raising concerns over the legality of the takedown order.
