From our contributor Alcibiades, Lowest of the Low. A video recently came to my attention, posted triumphantly by Ukrainian propagandists, allegedly showing the destruction of a Russian BMP. Shot from a drone camera, it shows a BMP-1 trundling along cluelessly in front of an occupied Ukrainian trench before it is destroyed by a close-range shot from an RPG into its exposed flank. At least one surviving crewman bails out immediately afterwards and takes cover behind the now-burning hulk. The video ends then without a closer examination of the wreckage or what should be several Russian casualties from the attack. On first viewing it raised several red flags that all was not as it seemed: an old BMP-1, the presence of a single vehicle instead of several, its lack of concern for the occupied trench to its right, a lack of identifiable Russian tactical markings (there are two or three squarish blotches on its armor that could be small "O"s), and the propagandists' failure to show the aftermath were all particular concerns. On the other hand the BMP was painted dark green and sported additional snow camouflage, making it look quite Russian otherwise. As such I filed it as inconclusive until another video surfaced today. The second video depicts a Ukrainian tank (by its ERA layout and side skirts, an older model of T-72B3) maneuvering back and forth across an open field and firing at a nearby treeline, allegedly occupied by hidden Russian troops. The key moment, however, is a brief shot at the end of the tank withdrawing after finishing its work. This shot is quite clear and shows that the tank is painted dark green and sports white snow camouflage on its upper structure, with a small Ukrainian balkenkreuz on the rear of its turret (reduced to a squarish blotch in the distance) and a yellow band on the barrel. Except for the barrel it looks almost identical to the earlier BMP. The Ukrainians destroyed one of their own BMPs in an inexcusable friendly fire incident and used it for propaganda.
