| 9 | The Bayt Dakira Synagogue, built in 1882 in the heart of the citadel of Essaouira, was officially inaugurated by the King of Morocco himself. In the 19th century, more than 50% of the population of old Mogador was Jewish, and there were 47 synagogues there. The Torah scroll preserved in Bayt Dakira dates back to the 17th century, and a marriage certificate from the 19th century—similar documents are displayed in the Jewish Museum. It was in the Maghreb—namely Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia—that they found refuge after the Reconquista, initiated by Isabella of Castile in 1492.
