Importance of Basics in UPSC Exams:
The glorification of UPSC as world's toughest exam and similar rhetoric has many aspirants developing wrong impression about it. We tend to believe that UPSC asks very complicated questions and thus we seek complexity even in simple things, to cater to the requirements. This is not true. In terms of ratio, just 10 to 15% questions are complicated, random and sometimes absurd (given to check your pressure handling). The major chunk of 80% or so, comes from Basic books, if only people read the basics thoroughly and multiple times. I had asked a very basic Buddhism question about the "11-headed bodhisattva image" and just 8% people knew it. Explains why not many go past Prelims. So what to do? Well, even a simple CBA will tell you that investing in 80% will have rich dividends than in the 20%. Not saying don't read complicated things. Each mark matters. Read the complicated but Eat the basics. IYKWIM.
