🩸 Sickle Cell Anemia Disease
- Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary condition, meaning that a child is likely to be born with it if either parent carries the gene.
- In this disease, red blood cells (RBCs), which are typically disc-shaped, deform into a sickle or crescent shape, giving the disease its name.
- This alteration in RBC shape leads to several complications, including reduced cell lifespan, organ damage, recurrent infections, and episodes of chronic and severe pain.
- Currently, there is no permanent cure. However, medications like hydroxyurea are commonly prescribed to manage symptoms.
- In 2023, the government launched the National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission, aiming to eliminate sickle cell disease as a public health issue by 2047.
