Short stories from Mahabharat on Generosity: Mahabharata is a great epic written by sage Vyasa. It is a story of family, love, property, strife and conflict. It is also a story that brings out the complex characters in each human being . It is a story that can be told to kids to help them understand that no situation in life is binary and one can view every situation from multiple points of view. One time the great warrior Arjuna and Lord Krishna were having a conversation. Arjuna was praising his older brother Yudhishtra as being the most generous person in the world. Krishna agreed that Yudhishtra was generous but Karna was even more generous. When Arjuna expressed his doubts, they decided to find out for themselves as to who was more generous. Arjuna and Krishna went to visit Yudhishtra first. They told him that Arjuna was working on a project that required good quality dry wood and if Yudhishtra would help them with it. Yudhistra immediately called his household staff and asked them to go find good quality wood. After sometime, the staff came back saying that they couldn’t find any dry wood as this was the monsoon. Yudhishtra was crestfallen and he apologized to them profusely. Next, Krishna and Arjuna went to Karna. Karna was very nice to them and received them as honored guests ( even though there were tensions between them). Arjuna repeated the same requirement to Karna. Karna immediately got hold of his staff and asked them to get dry good quality wood. After a while, they also returned saying that good quality wood was not available. Karna asked Arjuna and Krisha to wait. After sometime, Krishna and Arjuna got a bit worried and went inside to see what was happening. They saw Karna cutting down his own furniture to make logs. Arjuna was shocked. He asked Karna,” Why are you cutting your sandalwood furtniture?”. Karna replied, “ I am duty bound to help anyone who asks me for it”. Arjuna was move and rendered Speechless MORAL OF THE STORY When narrating this story to anyone you can set the context about how Karna was brought up in a humble background and how Karna and Arjuna came to fight in opposite sides? Lateral thinking questions you can ask. What does generosity mean to you? Is this story relevant in today’s context? Must you tear yourself apart to be of help to others?

STORY OF PRINCE SANJAYA Kunthi is the mother of the Pandvas in the great epic Mahabharat.   Pandavas are forced into exile by their cousins , the Kauravas. Almost at the end of the Pandava exile period of 13 years, Lord Shri Krishna comes to meet Kunti Devi.  Kunti Devi asks him to narrate a story to the Pandavas to inspire them. This story told by a mother to her sons was meant for her children to stand up to what was rightfully theirs. This is the story of a young prince Sanjaya.  The young prince Sanjaya had just lost his father. The kingdom was going through a lot of struggle and  a lot of things were changing. The king of the neighboring kingdom of Sindhu desh, saw it as an amazing opportunity to conquer Snajaya’s kingdom. As soon as Sanjaya heard that the enemy was marching on him, he lost all courage and panicked. His mother Vidula was an outstanding woman. She was a woman of courage and fortitude.  She motivated her son to fight the war. She told some things that inspired prince Sanjaya to pick up the sword and fight • She reminds of her own and his fate if the enemy king were to be successful • She reminds of his duty towards the kingdom • She reminded him that his father’s men were loyal to him and he need only to show some leadership skills before they start fighting for him • She reminded him that he was a trained warrior and all his training was for this moment • She told him that he had only two choices – the choice of being a hero and his story being told by generations to come or be forgotten These words inspired prince Sanjaya and he left the fort to fight.   But, when he saw the mighty army of Sinduja he panicked and retreated. Vidula was very angry. She refused to open the fort gates and told her son that he had no choice.   The minute he realized that he had no choice, Sanjaya’s old training skills came to him and he fought bravely. Seeing this, his men to started giving their best and they won the war. TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS SHORT STORY: This is a short story for everyone to remind them that life doesn’t always afford them a bed of roses.  It is also a story that reminds us that stories and narration were a great way to motivate people since time immemorial. No wonder, Kunthi devi  chose to use story telling as a technique to inspire her sons.

The Hungry Lion On a very hot day in the forest, a lion was feeling very hungry. He was looking for prey to eat. When he came out of his den, he looked around and all he found was a tiny rabbit. He leapt forward and caught the rabbit with ease. After catching the rabbit, he looked around and saw a deer running away in the distance. “This rabbit is too small. It can’t fill my stomach” thought the lion. The lion became greedy and thought; “Instead of eating this small rabbit, let me eat the big deer.” He let the rabbit go immediately and went chasing the deer. But the deer vanished into the forest before the lion could reach it. The lion had now lost the rabbit as well as the deer because of his greed. Moral of the story- A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

HUMBLE:  ARJUNA'S REQUEST The preparations for the great battle of  Kurukshetra were underway. Both the Pandavas and  Kauravas were preparing for battle . They were busy in finding allies and building their armies. Lord Krishna had over 10,000 men in his army and both the Pandavas and Kauravas were his cousins.  Arjuna and Duryodhana go to Dwarka to meet Krishna to request his help in the warWhen they reach the palace they are told that Krishna is asleep.  They enter the room where Krishna is sleeping. Duryodhana sits at Krishnas head considering him an equal. Arjuna was a great devotee of Lord Krishn and he sat respectfully at his feet. As soon as , Krishna woke up he saw Arjuna first. He saw Duryodhana second. Krishna said , “  Cousins, it is great to see you both. I will offer one thing each to you in the coming war.  My army 10,000 men to one side and I will personally join the other side but I will not touch a weapon.  I saw Arjuna first so I give the first choice.” Duryodhana started protesting, but Krishna prevailed. Arjuna bowed his head and respectfully said, “ Oh Lord Krisha! I choose you.” Duryodhana was greatly relived by this. He knew his cousins were fools, but even didn’t think that Arjuna would choose Krishna over an army of  10,000 Men. This choice was the reason the Pandavas won the war. Lord Krishna’s wisdom during the war proved to be a lot more valuable than the 10,000 soldiers. KEY TAKEAWAYS: We can remind that being humble is very important. It was Arjuna’s humility that made him sit at the feet of Krishna and thus gain the first choice. It is also a reminder that wisdom is far more important than brute force

The Pig and the Sheep A pig found its way into a meadow where a shepherd was grazing a herd of sheep. The shepherd caught the pig and carried him off toward the butcher shop when it started crying loud and struggled to get free. The sheep told the pig, "The shepherd catches us regularly and drags us off like that, and we don't make any noise." The pig replied, "My case and yours are altogether different; he catches and takes you to shave off the wool, but he wants me to be killed for making the bacon." Moral: Don’t compare two situations without understanding them.

Repost from Evalyst IAS
Prahlada’s faith in God Prahlada was the son of king Hiranyakashipu and queen Kayadhu. Hiranyakashipu believed himself to be the God and there is no other god than him. But Prahlada was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu and continued to pray Him despite getting repeated warnings from his father. 🧤Hiranyakashipu did not like Vishnu because the latter had killed Hiranyaksha, the evil brother of Hiranyakashipu. He scorned upon Prahlada’s devotion and attempted to kill his son several times, but every time the boy was saved by Lord Vishnu. 🧤One day, Hiranyakashipu challenged Prahlada to show Lord Vishnu, if he really existed. When his son replied that God was everywhere and in everything, Hiranyakashipu showed a pillar and asked Prahlada if Lord Vishnu was there in it. When Prahlada said ‘yes,’ his father got angered and raised his sword to kill him. 🧤Lord Vishnu appeared from the pillar in the form of Narasimha, a half man-half lion, and killed Hiranyakashipu. Moral: Be faithful to what you believe and don’t get discouraged by naysayers
