King Midas and Golden Touch
Once upon a time in ancient Greece, there lived a king named Midas. He had a lovely daughter whom he lovingly named Marigold. Although King Midas had immense wealth in his kingdom’s treasury, he was always dissatisfied and unhappy. He was always greedy for more wealth and wished he had more gold in his treasure.
One day as he was counting gold coins and admiring his treasure rooms, a wise Greek God appeared before him who offered the king a wish for some of his good deeds. Without wasting any time, King Midas quickly wished that everything that he touched should turn into gold. The Greek God granted his wish promptly and disappeared.
King Midas was delighted about his wish being granted, he went and touched an apple tree in his garden. To his excitement, the tree turned into gold instantly. He was so thrilled that he went on touching random things all around him, which turned into gold immediately. His joy knew no bounds and he was overwhelmed with excitement. Soon he was hungry and he returned to his palace to eat some food. However, though he was starving, he was disappointed that he could not eat anything as whatever he touched turned into gold instantly.
Seeing him frustrated and troubled, Marigold came running and threw her arms around her father to comfort him. But to his dismay, even his daughter turned into gold as he touched her. King Midas’ face turned pale and his heart sank with unbearable pain and grief. He was horrified upon seeing his daughter turn into a golden statue. He cried in anguish and regretted his wish for the golden touch. In no time, he realised his greed was his biggest ever flaw and begged the Greek God to take back his wish.
Soon the Greek God appeared before him and felt pity for his condition and took back the golden touch wish from him. Further, the wise God instructed King Midas to take a dip in the pond of his palace and sprinkle that water to all those things which he wanted to change back to the previous condition. He blindly followed the instructions and soon his daughter, Marigold was back to normal when he sprinkled the water on her. Thereafter, he was elated to get back his beloved daughter and promised to stop being greedy henceforth.
##Materialism is an unreasonable goal that will always be out of reach. In life, the desire to be happy is more important than the pursuit of materialism. We should strive for a life with few desires rather than a life without desires. It is difficult to live a life without desire. The goal of a life without want is only feasible if we can recognize and eliminate what we want.

Enrico Caruso
A young boy working in a factory in Naples, Italy who had dreams of one day becoming a great singer.
However, his first teacher discouraged him, telling him he could not carry a tune and he was not meant to be a singer.
Nevertheless, his mother, a poor peasant woman, expressed her belief in him. She took every opportunity to notice any improvements in his singing and she went barefoot in order to pay for his music lessons. The praise and constant encouragement from his devoted mother changed the boy’s life.
His name was Enrico Caruso and he went on to become one of the most famous opera singers of his time.
#The hand that rocks the cradle (meaning - It refers to the divine yet the laborious experience of motherhood, while praising mothers. does not mean that a mother literally rules the world, it does imply that a mother plays an all-powerful role in the life of her child: it means that a mother has power in household and the community, the smallest unit of the world. One morning, the Mongol warrior, Genghis Khan, and his court went out hunting. His companions carried bows and arrows, but Genghis Khan carried on his arm his favourite falcon, which was better and surer than any arrow, because it could fly into the skies and see everything that a human being could not.
However, despite the group’s enthusiastic efforts, they found nothing. Disappointed, Genghis Khan returned to the encampment and in order not to take out his frustration on his companions, he left the rest of the party and rode on alone. They had stayed in the forest for longer than expected, and Khan was desperately tired and thirsty. In the summer heat, all the streams had dried up, and he could find nothing to drink. Then, to his amazement, he saw a thread of water flowing from a rock just in front of him.
He removed the falcon from his arm, and took out the silver cup which he always carried with him. It was very slow to fill and, just as he was about to raise it to his lips, the falcon flew up, plucked the cup from his hands, and dashed it to the ground.
Genghis Khan was furious, but then the falcon was his favourite, and perhaps it, too, was thirsty. He picked up the cup, cleaned off the dirt, and filled it again. When the cup was only half-empty this time, the falcon again attacked it, spilling the water.
Genghis Khan adored his bird, but he knew that he could not, under any circumstances, allow such disrespect; someone might be watching this scene from afar and, later on, would tell his warriors that the great conqueror was incapable of taming a mere bird.
This time, he drew his sword, picked up the cup and refilled it, keeping one eye on the stream and the other on the falcon. As soon as he had enough water in the cup and was ready to drink, the falcon again took flight and flew towards him. Khan, with one thrust, pierced the bird’s breast.
The thread of water, however, had dried up; but Khan determined how to find something to drink, climbed the rock in search of the spring. To his surprise, there really was a pool of water and, in the middle of it, dead, lay one of the most poisonous snakes in the region. If he had drunk the water, he, too, would have died.
Khan returned to camp with the dead falcon in his arms. He ordered a gold figurine of the bird to be made and on one of the wings, he had engraved:
Even when a friend does something you do not like, he continues to be your friend.”
And on the other wing, he had these words engraved:
“Any action committed in anger is an action doomed to failure.”

How Savitribai Phule, India's first female teacher, dealt with abusers hell bent on preventing her from educating girls
Born in a well-to-do farmer family in the backward Mali community, Savitribai Phule was married off to 13-year-old Jyotirao Phule at the tender age of nine in-keeping with the tradition at the time of marrying off girls before they hit puberty.
Denied education by the parents she got education from her husband Jyotibha Rao phule -Jyotirao sent his wife to get trained at a school and she passed with flying colours along with another women Fatima Sheikh.
In 1848, the emancipated husband and wife finally established India’s first school for girls in Vishrambag Wada, Pune.
Going to the girls’ school to teach became a huge ordeal for Savitribai. She faced innumerable abuses and listened to obscenities heaped on her on the way to teach.
Groups of orthodox men followed the first female teacher of India on her way to work. They threw rotten eggs, cow dung, tomatoes and stones. They abused her in obscene language.
She would stop by and politely tell them, "My brothers, I am doing the noble job of educating your sisters.
The cow dung and stones that you are pelting on me are not a deterrent but rather an inspiration for me. It is as if you are showering petals on me. While I vow to serve my sisters, I also pray, 'May God bless you.'"
Slowly walking, she would arrive at the school, her strength ebbing away little by little each day thanks to the abuse.
Once she couldn’t take it anymore and decided to give up. But her husband convinced her to stay strong.
He gave her two sarees a course one to wear on the way to work which would be soiled by the garbage thrown at her; and another fresh saree to change into before she started work when she reached the school.
While returning, she could change into the same course saree to again take the filth from society.
She continued in this manner for a while, but one day, things got out of hand.
well-built ruffian stood in her path and told her that if she did not stop educating the Mahars and Mangs, she would have to pay a heavy prize.
A crowd gathered to watch the drama unfold but none helped her. The unfazed Savitribai slapped him hard. The stunned man ran away and so did the onlookers.
The shocking news spread like wildfire all over the city of Pune and finally brought a stop to the every-day abuse.
Empowered, Savitribai Phule established herself and more schools for women and girls till she was honoured for her exemplary work by the British government.
She went on to work towards slowly questioning and eradicating a lot of other social evils. From adopting her son’ Yashwant after her husband rescued a pregnant woman about to end her life, to setting up a delivery home for women in forced pregnancies called Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha’, Savitribai did all in her power to uplift the standard of women.
The couple also organized the first-of-its-kind barbers strike after castigating them for shaving the heads of young widows. As an example against the evil of untouchability, they also opened up their own water reservoir for everyone.

What is research, but a blind date with knowledge! ( 2021 mains )
Research is not answering predetermined questions, but rather asking a question and then finding the answer.
“Unintentional research” occurs when you do something else – for example read a magazine article on something you are interested in – and incidentally pick up some facts that can help you with your own project or study.“Doing research is most effective when it’s combined with other activities such as reading, talking to people, following links, etc.”

Story for introduction
1. Penicillin
In 1928 Dr Alexander Fleming returned from a holiday to find mould growing on a Petri dish of Staphylococcus bacteria. He noticed the mould seemed to be preventing the bacteria around it from growing. He soon identified that the mould produced a self-defence chemical that could kill bacteria. He named the substance penicillin.
2.Vulcanized Rubber
In the 1830s, natural rubber was a popular substance for waterproof shoes and boots, but its inability to withstand freezing temperatures and extreme heat soon left consumers and manufacturers frustrated. That led some to say rubber had no future, but Charles Goodyear disagreed. After years of trial and error trying to make rubber more durable, the scientist stumbled upon his greatest discovery by complete accident. In 1839, when showcasing his latest experiment, Goodyear accidentally dropped his rubber concoction on a hot stove. What he discovered was a charred leather-like substance with an elastic rim. Rubber was now weatherproof.
