How to Live Like
'60s Literary Icon Eve Babitz
Go to the party. Make celebrities your friends and lovers (Jim Morrison, Steve Martin, and Harrison Ford are fine for a start). Get a song written about you, if you can. Never order fewer than eight taquitos. Playing chess with Marcel Duchamp? Get naked — and have the occasion memorialized in a photograph for a good measure. | 794 |

DOG DAYS are over, and here comes September. Not autumn yet; simply September, which can be as sweltering as mid-July and as chill as late October, and usually manages to be both. | 755 |

Pale September, I wore the time like a dress that year
The autumn days swung soft around me, like cotton on my skin
But as the embers of the summer lost their breath and disappeared
My heart went cold and only hollow rhythms resounded from within | 533 |

When you're a teenager and in your early twenties it seems desperately eternal and excruciatingly painful. Whereas as you grow older you realise that most things are excruciatingly painful and that is the human condition. Most of us continue to survive because we're convinced that somewhere along the line, with grit and determination and perseverance, we will end up in some magical union with somebody. It's a fallacy, of course, but it's a form of religion. You have to believe.
There is a light that never goes out and it's called hope. | 825 |
