Friday 8 March 2024 The eThekwini municipal strike in the opinion of Cllr Andre Beetge At this point the municipal strike, initiated by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), affiliated to COSATU, part of the tri-partate alliance, on Tuesday 27 February, is effectively still underway. Let's call a spade a spade, the turmoil and discomfort that residents are being subjected to that extends water deprivation, electricity outages, health hazards due to non collection of refuse and sewage onto our streets and into our oceans, is nothing more than a political power play between the governing African National Congress (ANC) and emerging Mkhonto we Sizwe (MK) It's about brother turning on brother, of the one spitefully stabbing the other in the back to gain political power and access to the purse strings that unlocks economic potential. That's what it's all about, the suffering residents are merely pawns in a much bigger game, collateral damage that can be easily explained against the backdrop of supposed demands for salary increase & upgrading of posts, yet with no guarantees of increased productivity! The losers are the residents of this city, those who are exclusively reliant on water supplied by tankers, whether municipal or contracted, children who are send home because there is no water or electricity at schools, nauseating sewage and refuse festering in scorching heat! Between all of this circles the opportunist, like vultures waiting for their prey to loose hope, the political extremist, sending out unmandated messages, carefully crafted to secure support from the vulnerable, the old and the frail, those desperately clinging to messages of hope, strengthening the support of those benefitting from spreading false or inaccurate information, clawing a spot at the trough! Direct losses to the municipality are already beyond the R200 mil mark, revenue losses resulting from inability to supply, seemingly easily recoverable by mere estimations on municipal services in the future, ringleaders ignored by a Metro police seemingly more content to protecting their colleagues, as opposed to a deserving public. Unfortunately, lacking in all of this is both decisive political & administrative leadership, all but silence from city hall, a city manager & mayor, claiming ignorance or possibly just fearful of supporting the wrong faction in the leadup to elections? Locally, several sewage pump stations remain dysfunctional, creating a stench that has children taking off school, which begs the question whether intentional or accidental? Beaches remain closed as a result of continued high pollution levels, this despite degrees and qualifications being a dime per dozen? Recent water outages off the Launcheston reservoir, rendering Amanzimtoti central without water supply for more than 48 hrs, being nothing more that negligence, found to be no more than the closing of a valve and opening of another, whilst supply was consistently in excess of actual demand? Many, including the Cleansing & Solid waste (CSW) department, have criticised the decision to rather accumulate refuse on the open site along Civic road in Amanzimtoti Had we not taken that initiative, refuse would be strewn along verges, along lesser traveled roads, within municipal parks, open ground or under bushes. Whilst intended to facilitate refuse that couldn't be kept or created a health hazards, many inconsiderably took to dumping bottles, furniture and other objects that posed no problem, other than possibly occupying (temporary) space. But is there an even larger picture, was the intention to create panic, anarchy, encite sporadic action from the citizens who from the past weekend, started protesting all over the city in demand of the services that they are being deprived of? A political facade to point fingers that the present dispensation cannot control it's adminstration and that a new order is ready to step in?

TWO TEENAGERS KIDNAPPED OUTSIDE BRITS SCHOOL BRITS - Police in the North West have confirmed the kidnapping of two teenagers outside a school in Brits. A massive manhunt has been launched for three suspects. The pair were reportedly on their way to school when armed men in a vehicle crashed into their car and kidnapped them. Joslin Smith's mother in court with three co-accused Four suspects, including Joslin Smith's mother, accused of kidnapping the six-year-old, appeared very briefly in the Vredenberg Magistrates Court on Thursday. The first grader mysteriously disappeared last month and has still not been found. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) identified the accused as Jacques Rowhan Appolis, 31, Steveno Dumaizio Duwayne Van Rhyn, 27, Racquel Chantel Smith, 32, and Phumza Sigaqa whose age is unknown at this stage. They will be charged with trafficking of persons for exploitation and kidnapping. They will remain in custody until their next court appearance on the 13th of March. Police Spokesperson Malcolm Pojie says the search for Joshlin continues unabated. Detectives from Cape Town have also descended on the West Coast town of Saldanha where Joslin disappeared. Blood-stained items found during a search over the weekend have been sent to the Plattekloof forensic laboratory for analysis as part of the investigation.
