On the 5th of last month, local time, at the Roblox Developer Conference (RDC2025) held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, U.S., CEO David Baszucki’s keynote speech began not with new technology, advertising, or creator revenue, but with the topic of “safe play.” He stated, “We will build a safe and trustworthy platform,” adding, “We have implemented over 100 safety-related updates this year to ensure users can have age-appropriate experiences on Roblox.” Recently, tech companies have been strengthening “safety measures” to protect children and adolescents. As AI technology becomes mainstream and is increasingly integrated into platforms popular with minors, misuse and side effects have grown. However, some criticize these measures as “post-factum remedies,” pointing out that many countermeasures are easily circumvented by teenagers. With the advancement of AI and teenagers’ unrestricted access to AI-integrated platforms, various incidents have occurred. Through 3D virtual reality platforms like Roblox, minors have become victims of “child sexual exploitation,” and there have been cases where teenagers asked AI chatbots about methods for self-harm and followed through. Tech companies are introducing safety measures for children and adolescents. Roblox has implemented a “face-based age estimation system.” Since users can falsely claim their age—adults pretending to be minors or vice versa—the platform now verifies photos or government-issued identification documents.
