Story Time : >31 RR Cdo and their very initial exploits in J&K insurgency- While the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) was being set up, Gen B C Joshi was also keen to set up a commando RR unit that could emulate the Special Forces and conduct surgical operations against the terrorists, as calling in SF units would rust their skills due to having a saturated concentration on CI operations exclusively. Col.Ram Pradhan, a veteran Special Forces officer was brought in along with Maj. Abhay Sapru, most of you know him. Most of the men were either from the Dogra Regiment or the Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry. This proved to be an interesting challenge for the Special Forces officers who had been brought in hastily to try and shape this fledgling unit into a battalion fit for operations. Most of tactical training given to the troops was drawn on the experience that Maj Sapru had picked up as he had operated in Sri Lanka. The unit had to start from scratch, desperately trying to achieve cohesion in a limited time frame as most of the men and officers would be sent on deputation to the RR and then rotated back to their parent units. The men had to un-learn their conventional tactics, learn new skills akin to commandos and operate using unconventional methods. This is where the experiences gained from Sri Lanka came in handy and the troops began to shape up and conduct their operations, starting with the Doda valley in the south. The unit was involved in a major operation during the period when a new militant outfit, Al-Faran, kidnapped several foreign tourists in the Kashmir Valley. While the Army and the RR Battalions were immediately pressed into service, a team from this unit operating in Doda, south of the Pir Panjals in Jammu district received information that a militant identified as “Sohaid Bhai” was looking for contacts in the Kishtwar area. There was another terrorists with him – Hasan Ali also known as Al Turki. They had been tasked by the Al Faran to establish contact with the Harka-ul-Mujahideen squad in Kishtwar so that the hostages could be moved there to escape the army units searching for them. The unit established a dragnet across the area preventing the two militants from establishing contact as a cat-and-mouse game continued over the next 72 hours. Worried that commandos would get them, a Gujjar guide who was working with the militants ran away with Hasan Ali’s weapon. The commando team finally chanced upon the two militants who immediately gave up and led them to their hideout where two cameras of the hostages were recovered, details and whereabouts of the hostages who were still in the Kashmir Valley, however, could not be ascertained. >An anecdote on Effectiveness of para SF units in J&K CI/CT effort- After the Kargil Conflict Special Forces units based outside J&K continued to operate in the Valley, notching up significant successes. In one instance, intelligence had come in from intercepts that a senior militant commander of the Lashkar-e-Toiba was moving around in high mountains area north of Srinagar. A Special Forces team was immediately airlifted and placed in the area near the last sighting of the terrorists. The unit was known to improvise their standard issue equipment and they had hooked up their hand held thermal imagers to locally procured TV sets to monitor the house where the terrorists were holed up. A few days later, as the militants moved out, a small Special Forces team slipped out and began to trail them until a firefight broke out in a nearby nala. The firefight resulted in both the terrorists being neutralised. One of the dead terrorists was identified as Kasib, the son of the operations commander of the LeT, Zaki-ur-Rahman ‘Lakhvi’, this guy doesn't need no introduction.
