1986 :- first Biosphere Reserve Established Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve was the first biosphere reserve established in India. It was established in 1986 by UNESCO and is located in the Western Ghats. The reserve covers 5,520 km² and includes parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. It's made up of:  4 tiger reserves 2 national parks 1 wildlife sanctuary The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve includes two of India's 10 biogeographical provinces. It's mainly used to conserve in situ genetic diversity.  .
