Election Commission of India (SC – Ongoing hearing, July 2025) ⚖️ Summary: The Election Commission of India (ECI) informed the Supreme Court that an Aadhaar Card is not proof of citizenship, during the hearing on challenges to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. 📌 Key Points: 🔹 Aadhaar only verifies identity — not citizenship or domicile 🔹 Section 9 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 confirms this 🔹 ECI excluded Aadhaar & Voter ID from the list of 11 acceptable documents for voter enumeration 🔹 Bench questioned the timing of the revision just before elections 🔹 SC observed that citizenship determination lies with the MHA, not ECI 🔹 Petitioners include multiple opposition MPs: Mahua Moitra, Manoj Jha, KC Venugopal, Supriya Sule, and others 🔹 ECI invoked Article 326 to justify its revision powers 📝 The case is ongoing, and SC has asked ECI to consider Aadhaar, Voter ID & Ration Cards due to the short electoral timelines
