Although he held no formal position, Claver-Carone became one of the most influential figures in Washington on Venezuelan affairs since the U.S. incursion on January 3rd, in which U.S. forces captured President Nicolás Maduro.

🇨🇴💣 — Violence has once again shaken Colombia in what has been described as the aftermath of the public security collapse under the left-wing government of President Gustavo Petro. Earlier today, a truck bomb exploded in the city of Cúcuta, near the border with Venezuela, injuring 11 people and causing extensive damage around a police station.

➡️ The attack comes just six days before the inauguration of right-wing President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, in what appears to be an attempt by organized crime to challenge the country's political transition. The explosions and thick smoke engulfed the area early in the morning, spreading panic among local residents. According to information published by AFP, local authorities confirmed that eight police officers and three civilians were injured in the blast.

OVP denounces the death of an inmate in Carabobo and demands an investigation into the sanitary conditions of Venezuelan prisons. The Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) reported this Wednesday, July 29th, the death of another inmate, amid a context where official opacity and prison overcrowding exacerbate the vulnerability of the prison population. The deceased was identified as Ramón Alexis Franco, who was being held at the Centro de Formación del Hombre Nuevo (CFHN) El Libertador, located in the state of Carabobo, and whose death was recorded at the Dr. Enrique Tejera Central Hospital. According to data collected by the non-governmental organization, the apparent cause of death was a cardiopulmonary arrest. However, the OVP warned that there is a recurring pattern of misinformation in this case. So far, authorities have not specified what illness the inmate suffered from, how long he was ill, what type of medical assistance he received within the prison, or under what circumstances his transfer to the hospital was ordered.
