From my observation, identities for SPM level usually have 1 side being more complex than the other. So yes, keep 1 side (less complex one) unaltered. Beyond SPM tho, when both sides appear to be equal in complexity we often execute the "meet in the middle" strategy, working from both sides

regarding addmaths proving questions.
