The real question is whether Scripture permits long delays after language that sounds near or sudden. It obviously does. Isaiah declared Babylon's day "at hand" (Isaiah 13:6), yet its full desolation stretched far beyond one generation (Isaiah 13:19–22). Malachi said the Lord would "suddenly come to his temple" (Malachi 3:1)—yet four silent centuries separated that promise from Christ. Genesis 3:15 promised the serpent-crushing Seed with no timetable at all; fulfillment took millennia. The New Testament explicitly prepares us for delay. The bridegroom "tarried" (Matthew 25:5). The lord returns "after a long time" (Matthew 25:19). Jesus directly corrects those expecting the kingdom to "immediately appear" with a parable of a nobleman who leaves for a far country before returning (Luke 19:11–12). Peter confronts the very objection: "Where is the promise of his coming?" (2 Peter 3:3–4). His answer isn't "you're right"—it's that God isn't bound by man's clock: "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years" (2 Peter 3:8–9).
