What kills me is they had the opportunity to do it well. Mike literally walks in as Will is about to say it to Joyce, and they could have left it there so that it was intimate on the level of Will’s own mother and the person he’s loved for most of his life. Coming out to his mom and Mike made sense. Coming out to a group that huge made no damn sense, honestly.
The coming out scene felt like what straight people probably expect a coming out scene to be like, if I'm being honest. Impersonal and almost theatrical
