🇮🇳🇳🇵 India–Nepal Electricity Assistance 🔹 Key Development 👉🏻India approved the export of up to 654 MW of electricity to Nepal. 👉🏻The electricity will be supplied to flood-hit Nepal to support recovery after severe landslides and flash floods. 👉🏻The approved supply will continue up to 31 December 2026. 👉🏻Electricity can be supplied for up to 18 hours per day. 🔹 Why Nepal Needs Assistance 👉🏻Massive floods and landslides damaged Nepal's electricity infrastructure. 👉🏻Several power transmission networks and hydropower generation plants were affected. 👉🏻The disruption created an urgent need for electricity imports from India. 🔹 India–Nepal Power Trade 👉🏻Cross-border electricity trade is governed by the India–Nepal Power Trade Agreement, 2014. 👉🏻Trade also operates under India's Guidelines for Import/Export (Cross Border) of Electricity issued by the Ministry of Power. 👉🏻Nepal generally exports surplus hydropower to India during the monsoon and imports electricity during the dry season. 👉🏻India's designated authority for cross-border electricity trading is the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) under the Ministry of Power. 🔹 Important Transmission Link 👉🏻400 kV Dhalkebar–Muzaffarpur transmission line is an important cross-border electricity transmission link between India and Nepal. 👉🏻It facilitates electricity transmission between the two countries. 🔹 Regional Energy Cooperation 👉🏻India, Nepal and Bangladesh have increasingly developed trilateral electricity trade arrangements. 👉🏻Such arrangements support the development of an integrated South Asian energy grid. 👉🏻Regional power connectivity can improve energy security, reliability and utilisation of Nepal's hydropower potential. 🔹 Foreign Policy Significance 👉🏻 The assistance reflects India's “Neighbourhood First” policy. 👉🏻 Emergency electricity support strengthens India–Nepal bilateral relations. 👉🏻 Providing critical infrastructure assistance during a humanitarian crisis enhances India's soft power and regional goodwill. 👉🏻 It also strengthens India's role in South Asian regional energy integration.
