It’s Ubin Day today, marking the end of the two-week Pesta Ubin celebration, which saw over 1,000 participants! 🎉 Here are some Ubin updates: 📖 NParks has launched a new e-publication, An Update of the Biodiversity in Pulau Ubin, based on comprehensive biodiversity surveys across 11 taxonomic groups. It recorded 1,300 native fauna species, including 26 new records for Singapore and two species new to science, as well as over 550 native flora species. One of these newly discovered species is Anomala sp. aff. matricula (sp. nov.), a scarab beetle discovered right here on Pulau Ubin. 🪲 🐸 The Cryptic Painted Frog (Nyctixalus crypticus sp. nov.) has established a breeding population on Pulau Ubin under our Species Recovery Programme — an encouraging sign for the species’ long-term survival. 💚 The community-led Pesta Ubin Facebook and Instagram pages have also been refreshed and launched as official Friends of Ubin Network (FUN) pages. Follow them at https://go.gov.sg/fun-fb and https://go.gov.sg/fun-ig ! +++ More info on Pulau Ubin: https://go.gov.sg/nparks-pulau-ubin

Singapore’s natural landscapes hold more surprises than people realise! Through volunteering, individuals or families like the Lim family get to experience these moments up close. 🪨🌿 With guidance from our colleagues and fellow volunteers, hours in the field, and plenty of patience, the family has sharpened their observation skills to spot tiny critters and recognise birds by their calls. It has also been a welcome contrast to the fast pace of everyday life. 😌 Over the past 10 years, the Lim family has turned their simple curiosity about nature into a shared passion for Singapore’s biodiversity and a meaningful contribution to conservation. 💚 Explore our volunteer opportunities: go.gov.sg/nparks-volunteer-with-us #NParks #NParksBuzz #volunteering #CityInNature #CityInNatureSG #NParks #NParksBuzz

Have you seen this “coo-lourful” bird around? Male Pink-necked Green Pigeons (Treron vernans) are easily recognised by their bright pink neck and orange lower breast, while females are uniformly green in colour. 🩷💚 Unlike typical pigeons with cooing calls, they communicate using unique whistling and quacking noises. Spot them high up in the canopy on tall trees feeding on a wide variety of fruits where they act as important seed dispersers in the ecosystem. 📸: Francis Yap

#Funfact—the Singapore Kopsia (Kopsia singapurensis) was named in 1923, 36 years before our national flag was designed! Talk about being ahead of its time 😎 This flower bears fragrant flowers with white petals and a red throat, the exact colours of our national flag! 🇸🇬 Mirroring the five stars on our flag, this flower has exactly five petals! 🌸 Once thought to be nationally extinct, it was rediscovered in 2011 and has been successfully reintroduced into Singapore’s green spaces through the NParks’ Species Recovery Programme.

Today marks the launch of the 15th edition of the Festival of Biodiversity – the biggest biodiversity festival in Singapore! 🥳 Here are some exciting updates on our conservation efforts: 🪰 Our Tropical Forest Ecology Research programme marks its fifth anniversary this year! One of the projects led to Singapore’s largest survey of flying insects in tropical forests, conducted with researchers from NUS and LKCNHM. 🌳The Nature Conservation Masterplan has been updated to reflect NParks' evolving priorities and expanded functions. We look forward to continue co-creating initiatives with the nature community. Back for a second year, we're partnering with Public Libraries Singapore to bring educational experiences to the festival. Browse 12 curated biodiversity reads and visit the game stations to win a limited-edition festival pin — while stocks last! 🦅 🗓️: Sat & Sun, 6 & 7 June 2026 📍: The Plaza, National Library Building (Bugis) ⏰: 10am – 7.30pm 🔗: fob.nparks.gov.sg

Take a closer look at the Common Sendudok (Melastoma malabathricum) and you’ll find two sets of stamens or pollen-producing parts! 💛💜 The bright yellow stamens in the centre act as a visual decoy, containing pollen to feed visiting insects. In contrast, the long, curved, purple stamens that extend outward hold pollen that can only be unlocked through buzz pollination by carpenter bees!
