Nearly 1,000 Days Buried Under the Rubble: Palestinians to Bury 105 Bodies Killed in Israel’s Genocide by Quds News Network https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/nearly-1000-days-buried-under-the-rubble-palestinians-to-bury-105-bodies-killed-in-israels-genocide/ Palestinians are preparing to bury the remains of 105 people killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City on October 25, 2023. The strikes involved at least 20 bombs that destroyed the seven-story Al Taj 3 building and several other residential buildings in the Yarmouk Square neighbourhood. The victims’ remains remained beneath the rubble for nearly 1,000 days and were only recently recovered. Civil defence teams said they had been unable to reach the bodies at the time because heavy machinery needed for rescue operations was directly and deliberately targeted. The remains will be buried at Sheikh Radwan cemetery in Gaza City.

Humour and Non-Violence Are Tools of Gen Z’s Resistance Against Authoritarian Power by Shubhojit Sinha https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/humour-and-non-violence-are-tools-of-gen-zs-resistance-against-authoritarian-power/ Across recent youth movements in Morocco, Kenya, Peru, the Philippines, Nepal and India, humour, music, dance and satire have emerged alongside non-violent protest. Shubhojit Sinha examines how Gen Z activists use ridicule, gestures and social media to challenge repression, expose inequality and confront authoritarian power without responding to violence with violence. The article looks at the Gen-Z 212 movement in Morocco, protests in Kenya, anti-corruption uprisings in Peru and the Philippines, and youth mobilisation in Nepal and India. It also connects contemporary forms of resistance with Gandhian non-violence and the wider possibilities of building more inclusive, democratic societies

Corporatization of Healthcare Undermines Public Health by Dr Arun Mitra https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/corporatization-of-healthcare-undermines-public-health/ India’s healthcare system has undergone a major transformation, with corporate hospitals and private investment playing an increasingly important role. Dr Arun Mitra examines how the shift from public provision towards market-driven healthcare has affected affordability, access, professional autonomy and the doctor-patient relationship. He also looks at the concentration of hospital infrastructure in urban areas, the rising cost of private treatment, and the parallel privatization of medical education. The article argues for renewed public engagement with healthcare and highlights a recent symposium in New Delhi that brought medical professionals and economists together to discuss advocacy, networking and the goal of health for all.

Reclaiming Workers’ Ownership over Artificial Intelligence and Technologies by Bhabani Shankar Nayak https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/reclaiming-workers-ownership-over-artificial-intelligence-and-technologies/ AI-led automation is transforming work, technology and everyday life, raising concerns about employment, privacy, environmental impacts and the growing control of technology by corporations. This article revisits the history of the Luddite movement, arguing that textile workers were not opposed to technology itself but resisted low wages, poor working conditions and the loss of workers’ rights. It examines contemporary resistance to AI and big technology companies, while questioning approaches that reject technology altogether. The article argues for workers’ collective ownership and control over AI and other technologies, with the aim of humanising, democratising, decentralising, decolonising and decarbonising technological development.

Remembering the Sabra-Shatila massacre by Heather Stroud https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/remembering-the-sabra-shatila-massacre/ Forty-four years after the Sabra-Shatila massacre, survivors and families continue to seek justice for the civilians killed in the Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut in September 1982. Heather Stroud recalls the massacre through veteran reporter Robert Fisk’s account of the scenes he encountered after the killings. The article places Sabra-Shatila within the wider history of violence experienced by Palestinians and Lebanon, from the Nakba and refugee camp massacres to more recent attacks in Gaza and South Lebanon. It also examines the continuing calls for accountability, remembrance and justice for victims of past and present atrocities.

Outsourcing the Mind: Can the Humanities Save Critical Thinking in the Age of AI? by Dr Tanupriya and Dr Siddharth Dubey https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/outsourcing-the-mind-can-the-humanities-save-critical-thinking-in-the-age-of-ai/ AI is increasingly embedded in higher education, helping students draft, summarise, research and make decisions. The convenience, however, may come with an environmental and cognitive cost. The article examines research linking frequent AI use with cognitive offloading and weaker engagement in reasoning and argumentation, while noting that deliberate, moderate use does not carry the same implications. It also considers AI-generated misinformation, including fabricated references, and the growing reliance on AI for emotional support. Against this backdrop, the humanities offer practices of close reading, sustained attention, interpretation, argumentation and moral reasoning that can help preserve independent judgement in an AI-shaped educational environment.

Denial as a Way of Life: Netanyahu on Egyptian Warnings about October 7 by Dr Binoy Kampmark https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/denial-as-a-way-of-life-netanyahu-on-egyptian-warnings-about-october-7/ New reports examined in this article raise questions about what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government knew before the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack. The article discusses warnings reportedly conveyed by Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel, including a September 2023 visit to Israel, as well as separate reports concerning UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed. It also examines warnings from Israeli observers and intelligence officials that were reportedly dismissed. Netanyahu has denied receiving or discussing such warnings and has taken legal action against media outlets and journalists reporting them. The article considers the political and institutional consequences of these conflicting accounts.

When a Mother Becomes a Militant: Why Are Baloch Women Taking Up Arms? by Baloch Siddik Azad https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/when-a-mother-becomes-a-militant-why-are-baloch-women-taking-up-arms/ Balochistan’s conflict has lasted for seventy-eight years, marked by insurgencies, military campaigns, political negotiations, disappearances, imprisonment and repeated demands for political answers. The article examines how this prolonged conflict has affected Baloch women, particularly mothers, sisters and daughters of disappeared people who have entered public protests and political activism. It also considers the narrowing of peaceful political space and the emergence of women in armed organisations, including the 2022 Karachi University bombing carried out by Shari Baloch. The article argues that understanding militancy requires attention to the years of grievance, repression, political failure and unresolved conflict that precede it.

Venezuela’s Battle for Sovereignty Continues by Francisco Dominguez and Roger D Harris https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/venezuelas-battle-for-sovereignty-continues/ Venezuela’s relationship with the United States remains shaped by a sharp asymmetry of power following the January 3 US military attack, which killed more than 100 people and resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores. The Venezuelan government has sought to avoid direct military confrontation while preserving the state and maintaining its sovereignty. A new oil agreement with US companies has involved significant concessions, while Venezuela retains ownership of its oil industry. The article examines the country’s diplomatic strategy, its efforts to recover economically, renewed international engagement, and the tensions between Washington’s pressure and Caracas’s strategy of adaptation.

The Unknown Cultural Revolution: Life and Change in a Chinese Village by Pon Chandran https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/the-unknown-cultural-revolution-life-and-change-in-a-chinese-village/ Dongping Han’s "The Unknown Cultural Revolution: Life and Change in a Chinese Village" examines China’s Cultural Revolution from the perspective of rural communities. Drawing on his experiences in Jimo County, Shandong, along with interviews and archival material, Han focuses on changes in village politics, education, healthcare and economic life. The book examines how ordinary peasants gained greater opportunities to challenge local officials and participate in governance, while rural schooling, healthcare, irrigation, electrification, agricultural mechanisation and village industries expanded. Pon Chandran explores Han’s account and its emphasis on rural experiences often overshadowed by histories centred on urban political conflict.

Chandra Singh Garhwali: The Soldier Who Chose Conscience Over Orders by Bharat Dogra https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/chandra-singh-garhwali-the-soldier-who-chose-conscience-over-orders/ In April 1930, during the freedom movement in Peshawar, British forces ordered Indian soldiers to fire on unarmed Khudai Khidmatgar protesters. Chandra Singh Garhwali, a Garhwali soldier commanding one of the units, refused to pass on the order and instructed his soldiers not to fire. He and his fellow soldiers were subsequently sentenced to long prison terms. Garhwali spent 11 years in prison before his release in 1941 and later participated in the Quit India Movement, serving another prison sentence. His life also included work with the communist movement and efforts toward people-based development in the Himalayan region. His stand remains a significant example of conscience in military service.

From the Privatization of Religion to the Wars of Identity by Dr Salim Nazzal https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/from-the-privatization-of-religion-to-the-wars-of-identity/ Dr Salim Nazzal examines the fragmentation of religion, culture and identity in the modern world through the idea of the “privatization of religion.” As contact between different faiths and worldviews expands, competing interpretations multiply and certainty becomes harder to sustain. Nazzal argues that identity, while essential to human belonging, can also become a barrier when transformed into hostility or isolation. He suggests that future conflicts may increasingly take the form of wars of identity, alongside broader cultural clashes. Against this fragmentation, he calls for a universal humanism that recognizes plurality while affirming the shared dignity and destiny of all human beings.

Prose Poems by Govind Geethanand https://countercurrents.org/2026/10/prose-poems/ Govind Geethanand’s two prose poems explore the uneasy distance between human suffering and the structures, habits and ideas that allow indifference to persist. “The Guise of Progress” moves from an unsettling conversation about the guillotine to memories of Auschwitz, Minab and Palestine, tracing a descent into moral disquiet. “An Invitation” follows an artist arriving in Le Havre, encountering a world of outward radiance and inward detachment, while searching through streets, churches and conversations for a way to understand collective pain. Together, the poems reflect on violence, alienation, memory and the difficulty of remaining attentive to suffering.

The US Constitution Bars Those “Engaged in Insurrection” From Office – So Will Nicaragua’s by John Perry https://countercurrents.org/2026/09/the-us-constitution-bars-those-engaged-in-insurrection-from-office-so-will-nicaraguas/ Nicaragua is undertaking reforms to its electoral system amid growing tensions with Washington. The changes, discussed in neighborhood meetings across the country, would restrict electoral participation by people who receive foreign funding, conspire to overthrow the government, or call for sanctions or military intervention against Nicaragua. The article places these reforms in the context of US involvement in elections across Latin America, including Honduras and Brazil, and cites statements by US officials and President Donald Trump about influencing regional elections. It argues that Nicaragua’s measures are intended to protect its electoral process and popular sovereignty from foreign interference.
