✅Traditional mask-making (Mukha Shilpa) and manuscript painting from Majuli, a river island in Assam, have received the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tags. ✅Originating in the 16th century alongside Saint Sankardeva’s Neo-Vaisnavism movement, both these art forms emerged as a conduit for spreading his message of devotion and social unity. ✅Sankardeva ingeniously melded various art forms like painting, dance, music, and theatre, incorporating masks representing a myriad of characters and emotions. ✅These masks encapsulate the indigenous socio-religious culture and highlight the creativity of local materials ✅Today, mask-making remains a vital traditional craft in Majuli, playing a central role in Assam’s Sattriya culture, practised within the Xatras and by individual artisans in surrounding villages. ✅The vibrant colours used in these paintings are derived from natural ingredients, while the ink is specially prepared to ensure its longevity. ✅The GI tags awarded to these art forms will significantly contribute to preserving Assam’s rich cultural heritage and promoting their global recognition #UPSC2024 #PRELIMS #Art_and_culture
