🤔 Why AI Needs You More Than You Think In our recent post, we explained that current AI models aren't good at their "own" thinking but can be great collaborators on a variety of tasks. The Simple Reason Behind AI's Limitations There's a simple reason LLMs are great at what they do but not so great at "thinking on their own." At their core, LLMs are sophisticated next-word predictors, sometimes called T9 on steroids. By giving a sufficiently sophisticated neural network the task of next-word prediction and providing it with trillions of word sequences, we can enable it to uncover many patterns in the data, including patterns of thought and language. But in this very concept lies a major limitation: LLMs are great at continuing thoughts, but they were never designed to create new ones from scratch. Why AI Needs Human Guidance LLMs are designed to collaborate with people who know what they are doing. They require guidance to do a great job, and they will only do a great job if someone guides them properly. If you simply ask "make me a million dollars", it won't be able to do it. Here's The Research That Proves It There's a substantial body of research on this topic. A widely cited study, "Generative AI enhances individual creativity but reduces the collective diversity of novel content" (Doshi & Hauser, Science Advances), has shown that while AI assistance makes individuals' writing more creative, it reduces the group's overall creativity. Another study, "Echoes in AI: Quantifying lack of plot diversity in LLM outputs" (Xu et al., PNAS), examined the creativity of LLM-generated stories and found them to be very similar to one another. Another study, "Who Is the Best Creative Thinking Partner?" found that human-human groups outperformed human-AI and human-Internet groups on divergent thinking tasks. The Training Data Problem Another major limitation is the use of human-generated training data, which can be filled with flaws and mistakes. You might have seen the news about LLMs reciting propaganda narratives. Data filled with lies is especially prevalent in demanding and competitive areas, such as trading. What We See in Our Own Work We apply cutting-edge AI tools almost every day to help with market research, and we often find that LLMs provide misleading advice, sometimes the opposite of what our research shows to be true. 🆚 Nova vs Legacy: The number's dont lie [Performance Analysis] Recently, our Legacy portfolio reached an all-time high, riding January's trends. In this short burst, it outperformed everything else, including our Nova portfolio. However, a system's performance can't be measured by just 1 or 2 months of trading. To do that reliably, we need at least 6 months of live results or more. So, let's compare the Nova and Legacy portfolios head-to-head over a longer period and see the differences. The Numbers Don't Lie As shown in the attached screenshot, since June 2025, our Legacy portfolio has achieved an average annual return (CAGR) of 1.0305^12-1=43.4%, with a drawdown of 26.67%. That's far from the best Legacy account we have, but we'll use it for reference. In the same period, Nova achieved a much higher CAGR of 1.0488^12-1=77.1%, with a much lower drawdown of only 11.17%. Risk-Adjusted Performance When we adjust profitability for the drawdown in the same period, it's 43.4%/26.67%=1.63 for Legacy and 77.1%/11.17%=6.90. 1.63 vs. 6.90! Nova shows clear superiority here. The question is whether this will always be true. Of course, nobody knows the future, but we have some thoughts. How Each System Works Nova has been designed to be an "all-weather" portfolio. First, it carefully analyzes the current market microstructure to understand the context. Then it selectively employs only those systems that tend to perform better in that context. On the other hand, the Legacy portfolio primarily targets short-term trends. When we have an abundance of such trends, as in 2024 or January 2026, we see significant outperformance relative to Nova and almost everything else. However, when the market is less certain and lacks many short-term trend opportunities, it tends to underperform relative to Nova. The Verdict So, which one is better? The answer depends on the current market context. If the market is favorable for short-term trends, it's Legacy. But when the market is different, it's Nova. 🤔 Are We Really Using AI for Trading? "Are You Really Using AI for Trading?" That's a question we've heard many times over the past few years. The short answer is yes, but specifics vary. Let's dive in. First, let's agree on terms: What most people mean by AI is large language models (LLMs). Yes, we've been using LLMs in our EAs for a while now. They are part of an AI-driven filter in some of our EAs, such as EasyAI. However, they do not trade on their own. Since fully AI-driven trading is still unreliable, we use them only as a filter on top of time-tested logic that's proven to work over many years of live, verified trading. In addition, we've been using some of the best available models with Deep Research/Deep Think functionality, which allows them to fully utilize their potential. Do we use LLMs during research and development? The answer is two-fold. On the one hand, modern AI tools are great at assisting with market research. What used to take weeks and a team of experts now takes days and one person coordinating AI agents. On the other hand, vibe coding often produces code that's hard to maintain reliably. So, while we are doing research and prototyping with ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini, when it comes to actual production-ready solutions that need to be 99.999% reliable on real-money accounts, we still do it almost entirely manually. However, more advanced users might argue that artificial neural networks qualify as AI. So, do we use neural networks in our EAs? The answer is yes. We have used neural-net-based filtering in some of our EAs, such as Golden Pickaxe and Perceptrader AI, for several years. We even pioneered a rare feature that allows users to optimize neural nets within MT 4/5 EAs. But why aren't we using AI directly? Can't we just plug in ChatGPT 5.2 Deep Research/Gemini 3 Pro Deep Think/Claude Opus 4.6 and let them make trading decisions, since they are so smart? As reality has shown us time and again, modern AI models aren't good at "just do it". If they aren't given clear instructions like "do this to achieve that", their "own" thinking tends to be heavily correlated and not always reliable. In common words: "garbage in, garbage out". Why exactly that is the case is a topic for another post. But for now, we'll conclude that these models are only as good as the person guiding them allows them to be. To conclude: Yes, we are heavily utilizing AI, but we are doing so selectively. We use AI's strengths, such as speed and pattern recognition, while avoiding it in areas where its weaknesses outweigh its strengths.
