The Explosion of Energy Demand for AI
Artificial intelligence is often discussed as a software revolution. Physically, however, it is an electricity-and-infrastructure revolution. Every AI response requires computation in data centres, and increasingly capable systems require more memory, more processors, longer operating times, and more internal reasoning. The central question is not whether one AI query uses a lot of energy. Most […]

| 5 | Can nuclear energy be judged by evidence rather than fear?
This article challenges the assumption that even tiny radiation exposures are necessarily dangerous, arguing that precautionary policies and public fears may sometimes cause more harm than they prevent. It makes the case for reassessing nuclear-energy regulation in light of evidence—and for having a more informed debate about nuclear power’s role.
An argument worth examining: where should caution end and evidence begin?

The Forges of Mercury
https://img.youtube.com/vi/HyHUrHDpjII/0.jpg The Forges of Mercury is a calm, two-and-a-half-hour sci-fi sleep story built on real science: life at a mining station on Mercury, quarrying the planet to build a Dyson swarm around the Sun.
Tonight we spend some years on Mercury, at a mining station near its north pole, where an electromagnetic launcher throws refined rock into space to build a swarm of thin collectors around the Sun. Find ice in the shadows of the innermost planet, live through a day longer than its year, follow Freeman Dyson's idea from a one-page letter to the first collectors catching light, and weather a storm from the Sun.
Slow, gentle narration over soft piano and strings, with no sudden sounds: for falling asleep to, or for quiet listening. Exact captions are available (CC).

What's real and what's imagined
Grounded in real science: Mercury's orbit, its 3:2 spin and 176-day solar day, the double sunrise and the hot poles; ice in permanently shadowed polar craters (Arecibo radar and MESSENGER); the giant iron core, the offset magnetic field and the shrinking planet; MESSENGER's surprises (sulfur, potassium, graphite, hollows) and the Caloris basin; the perihelion puzzle, Vulcan and Einstein's 43 arcseconds; Mariner 10, MESSENGER and BepiColombo; Gerard O'Neill's mass drivers; Freeman Dyson's 1960 letter, Project Orion, Stapledon and Kardashev; the Sun's output compared with humanity's; IKAROS and space power beaming; solar flares, the Carrington event, Mercury's magnetosphere and sodium tail; and the searches for other civilizations, from Project Ozma to the infrared hunts for Dyson swarms.
Speculative, but within known physics: the mining station, the nine-kilometer mass driver, the orbital factories, the swarm of thin collectors and the beamed power, and the economy and charter built around them.
Imagined: the people and their story.

SciHi2026 Session 5 | Dr Samyak Munot Radiation: Friend or Foe | Sept 27, 2026
https://img.youtube.com/vi/ldLIgCO0VK4/0.jpg
Is radiation a friend or a foe? Dr. Samyak Munot, a nuclear engineer, looks at what the evidence says: what radiation is and how we measure it, what the data from Hiroshima and Nagasaki shows, the accidents at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima, and the many ways radiation is used every day, in crops, food, industry and medicine. He ends with why we fear radiation and the energy a growing India will need, then answers questions from school students.
For SciHi teams, he suggested:
Measure the background radiation around you (from bananas, walls, the outdoors) with a Geiger counter.
Study where radiation is useful in small settings, such as replacing diesel generator sets, or in plant growth.

Elk River Nuclear Reactor Lessons for Small Reactor Builders
https://img.youtube.com/vi/tCWhEN7HxxM/0.jpg
The Elk River nuclear reactor in Minnesota was a 22 megawatt boiling water reactor that shut down in January 1968 after cracks appeared in its vessel and piping, and it cost the Atomic Energy Commission about $6.15 million to dismantle by 1974.
The plant ran for roughly 2.5 effective full power years under the Atomic Energy Commission's Power Reactor Demonstration Program. A rural electric cooperative owned the coal fired plant beside it, and the federal government owned the reactor. Its construction estimate rose 84 percent, from about $6.2 million to about $11.4 million, before it made power. Its dismantling record is one of the earliest complete cost datasets for a small United States power reactor.
What you will learn:
Why a coal fired superheater sat between the reactor and the turbine
How the construction estimate rose from $6.2 million to $11.4 million
What cracks in the vessel and piping did to the 1968 repair decision
What 38 months of dismantling cost, including 92,000 cubic feet of waste and 75 person rem of worker exposure
How 10 CFR 50.75, 10 CFR 20.1402, and the new 10 CFR Part 53 apply to small reactor developers today
About the author: I’m the Innovation Attorney, and I have practiced Silicon Valley technology and internet law for roughly 30 years. I trained as a chemist and served as a nuclear trained submarine officer aboard USS William H. Bates, so I read reactor decommissioning records with an operator's eye for coolant leakage and a lawyer's eye for who pays.
Next up: the Army ML 1, a truck transportable reactor that ran a gas turbine in Idaho, and what its closed cycle turbine taught the Army about the cost of mobility.

There's a MASSIVE Radioactive Hot Spot Beneath Australia and Nobody Knows About It

There's a MASSIVE Radioactive Hot Spot Beneath Australia and Nobody Knows About It #radioactive #geology #australia
#australia #radioactive #geology
Out past the last paved road in South Australia's far northeast, where the red dirt runs flat to the horizon, and the nearest town is a scatter of buildings called Innamincka, tucked inside a regional reserve covering nearly 5400 square miles, something is simmering under your feet. There's a Massive Radioactive Hot Spot Beneath Australia — And One Problem Keeps It Locked Underground.
You can't see it. It sits more than 2.5 miles down, a slab of granite hotter than 464 degrees Fahrenheit, and it's hot because it's quietly radioactive. People drilled into it. They pulled electricity out of it. Then they filled the holes with cement and walked away. The heat was never the problem. The ground was.
Start with why it's hot, because it isn't the usual reason. Australia has no active volcanoes and no geysers, nothing like the steaming landscapes of Iceland. The heat here is homemade. Granite is naturally studded with uranium, thorium, and radioactive potassium, and as those atoms slowly fall apart, they give off a little warmth. Geoscientist Sandra McLaren once pointed out that nuclear power and geothermal power run on the same fuel, and the real difference is how concentrated it is in one spot and what you choose to do with it. In a reactor, decay is forced into a frenzy. In granite it just ticks along at its own patient pace, and Australia's crust carries, on average, two to three times the usual concentration of these elements.
