River Jude Phoenix was an American actor and musician. The older brother of actor Joaquin Phoenix, he was known as one of the preeminent acting talents of his generation. From ages three to seven, Phoenix lived in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, where his parents were doing missionary work. In 1973, the family joined the pedophile cult ''Children of God'' and settled in Caracas, Venezuela. During a 1991 interview, Phoenix stated he was raped at the age of four by other children while in the cult, but he had "blocked it out" for years. Talent agent Iris Burton spotted River, Joaquin, Summer, and Rain singing for spare change in Westwood, Los Angeles, and was so charmed by the family that she soon represented the four siblings.
Phoenix spent the days preceding his death on a drug binge with John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, consuming cocaine and heroin. On October 30th, Phoenix arrived at The Viper Room, a West Hollywood nightclub partly owned by Johnny Depp, with his girlfriend Samantha Mathis, his brother Joaquin, and sister Rain. The actor was to perform his music but wouldn't live long enough to do so. Phoenix died at age 23 in the early hours of October 31, 1993, from acute multiple drug intoxication, including cocaine and opiates taken at The Viper Room. He was allegedly given a "hot shot" by someone close to him, with Johnny Depp's blessing, who intensely hated Phoenix out of jealousy over their mutual love interest, Winona Ryder.
