📊 Gold falls below $2,500 after PCE data meets expectations Gold (XAU) fell below $2,500 on Friday as the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures  (PCE) Price Index figures aligned with expectations. 👉 Possible effects for traders Last week's economic data revealed that both headline and core PCE numbers rose by 0.2% in July, aligning with expectations, while annual rates held steady instead of the anticipated increase. This development cooled expectations for a significant 50-basis-point rate cut by the Federal Reserve (Fed) in September. The PCE data reflected the economy's resilience to higher interest rates, especially after the upward revision to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Despite this, markets still expect a total of 100 bps rate cuts in the three Fed meetings this year. Similarly, the ECB is expected to deliver rate cuts due to the sharp deceleration in inflation, as indicated by August's preliminary inflation figures. Protests have erupted across Israel after the military recovered the bodies of six hostages killed in Gaza. Israel's largest labour union has called for a nationwide strike, stating that the ‘entire Israeli economy will shut down’. Meanwhile, concerns about China's sluggish economy, the world's largest buyer of gold, are weighing on the precious metal. The Chinese Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell from 49.5 in July towards 49.1 in August, missing the market expectation of 49.5. XAUUSD fell during the Asian trading session. Today, the formal macroeconomic calendar is uneventful. This week, the U.S. Manufacturing PMI for August will be released on Tuesday, followed by the Services PMI on Thursday. The focus will then turn to Friday's U.S. employment data, including nonfarm payroll (NFP), the Unemployment Rate, and Average Hourly Earnings reports for August.
