The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Europe from Africa.
The continents of Europe and Africa are separated by the Strait. On the northern side are Spain and Gibraltar, and on the southern side are Morocco and Ceuta.
It lies within the territorial waters of Spain, Morocco, and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, leading to complex geopolitical dynamics.
The Mediterranean waters are saltier than the Atlantic waters and form a layer of bottom water that constantly flows out into the Atlantic.
While part of the strait falls within British territorial waters, international laws, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, allow for freedom of navigation and overflight, making it a crucial international passage.
The strait is an important bird area, serving as a migratory route for hundreds of thousands of seabirds annually.
It is home to diverse marine ecosystems, including cold-water coral communities and a resident pod of orcas facing threats from pollution.
It is a vital shipping route between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, with ferries operating between Spain, Morocco, Ceuta, and Gibraltar.

Atmospheric circulation involves the large-scale movement of air, and the means by which thermal energy is distributed on the surface of the Earth. This circulation is divided into three cell systems: the Hadley cell, the Ferrel cell, and the Polar cell.
Hadley Cell: The Hadley cell is named after George Hadley who discovered this wind pattern. It is located between the Equator and the tropics, approximately 30 degrees north and south of the Equator. The warm, moist air at the Equator rises and moves towards the poles. When this air cools, it descends creating a circulation pattern known as the Hadley cell.
Ferrel Cell: The Ferrel cell, named after William Ferrel, is found between 30 degrees and 60 degrees latitude. Unlike the Hadley cell, the air in the Ferrel cell moves in the opposite direction on the surface of the Earth. This cell is responsible for the prevailing westerly winds in the middle latitudes.
Polar Cell: The Polar cell is the atmospheric circulation structure at the North and South Poles. It occurs from 60 to 70 degrees latitude to the poles. The circulation of this cell is opposite to that of the Hadley cell.

⚜Bab el-Mandeb Strait
🏵 Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a strait between Arabia (northeast) and Africa (southwest) that connects
the Red Sea (northwest) with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean (southeast).
🏵With the building of the Suez Canal, the strait assumed great strategic and economic importance, forming a portion of the link between the Mediterranean Sea and East Asia.
🏵The fl ow through this strait provides for the circulation between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, since no fl ow takes place through the Suez Canal.
🏵The strait’s Arabic name means “the gate of tears,” so called from the dangers that formerly attended its navigation.
