#quora #application #suggestion 🗒What is the most mind-blowing college application essay that you have ever seen? One applicant was six-years-old when the Taliban attacked his village in Afghanistan. He received 50 bullet wounds in the legs, and was left for dead. A neighbor saved his life by taking him to the Red Cross. He was separated from his parents, who also presumed the boy was dead. The boy believed the same was true of his entire family. Miraculously, the family reunited in Iran. There, this amazing boy—as a street rat— learned to speak Farsi (his native tongue is Urdu), English, and Arabic. After emigrating to the U.S., the boy continued his education. He received over 20 surgeries on his legs, but walked with a pronounced limp. He remained embittered over his childhood experiences, and the pain and suffering he had to endure because of the Taliban. When he was sixteen, he received an astonishing, unexpected phone call. A police officer in Afghanistan had located him. In the officer’s custody was a member of the Taliban who had raided the boy’s village. He had had a trial, and was already convicted of war crimes. However, according to Afghan law, the victim is allowed some say-so over the accused’s punishment. The boy was told that he had the authority to send this man to prison for a long time, or to decrease the sentence significantly— even be released— if the boy forgave the crime. They then put the Taliban soldier on the phone so he could plead his case directly to the boy. The man talked about having a wife and young children, and begged the boy’s forgiveness. The boy had no idea whether or not the man was sincere, or whether he was merely trying to reduce his jail time by acting remorseful. The boy wasn’t given any time to think it over. The police officer wanted a decision on the spot, via telephone. Not knowing what to do, emotions boiling over, the boy said, “Just let him go,” and abruptly hung up the phone. By the time he was as high school senior, writing his college application essays, the boy—now a young man— still didn’t know if he had done the right thing. But his impulsive decision to forgive the Taliban soldier was the beginning of his journey to heal some of his emotional wounds, enabling him to contemplate his future, rather than obsessing about his past. There are details to this story I am leaving out, but you get the gist. It was an astonishing tale, one that I will never forget. The cherry on top of it all was that after getting a college education, this student intended to return to Afghanistan and help his people— particularly those who had been traumatized by brutality or cruelty. ⚡️Feel free to share! @me_and_my_way
