I think I didn't write about it here yet, but Signature 27 got a dedicated "action camera", which doesn't seem to be anything particular. As you can see on this photo, supposedly coming from it, the star symbols are absolutely bent by rolling shutter. No global shutter there, no "event-based sensor". My bet is on unused stock of IMX563. It's a really fast 12MP 2PD sensor they already used in the past that may offer a slightly faster capture than LYT-L910. And while it's capable of 4k240, the hands-on video this comes from is missing even 4k120 from normal video mode and so presumably from manual video mode too (if there's one). Not a very action experience if you think about it, guess they'll sell it to people on next year's device instead.

You might've heard of SimpleX, conceptually meant to be the TOP1 chat app when it comes to the offered level of privacy, as they avoid the presence of (shared) identifiers as much as possible and bounce data around. Basically, the equivalent of GOS in communicators. Of course GOS admins wouldn't recommend it, as it's a small scale project relative to the well established Signal. Turns out they're into monetization nearly as much as Telegram and you have to update or tap (I did both while not looking closely) the banner (which thankfully doesn't open your browser) for it to get a close button in its top right corner. Perhaps this way they won't run out of money too soon despite unsustainable ideas, such as client side file size limits, but their rep to me is permanently tainted 😬

https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenAussie/comments/1v8wv7q/age_verification_hit_me_anyone_else/ According to experiences from post above and Apple's documentation at https://support.apple.com/en-us/125666, people in Australia, Brazil and UK running a recent enough iOS (will?) have to verify their age to have an unconstrained browser and in-app communication without a local ML model checking incoming and outgoing media. The string "To change these restrictions, your country or region requires you to confirm you're an adult." is quite self-evident. I suppose the limited discussion on this topic comes from an automatic pass for people with a *credit* card added to their account or this feature simply doesn't apply to people who ran an earlier version, where it was disabled by default. An interesting extra aspect is that even though Apple claims local processing in age estimation from selfie, they claim it works alongside the cloud, for an unknown reason.

https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/proled-xdr-display/ Uhhh, how do we merge the monikers Pro and LED in a way that makes it sound like OLED? Wait, no, it is an OLED. A Public Relations OLED?

In the era of unhinged vibecoded projects, I propose: Unsolder A18 Pro out of MacBook Neo, put it into iPhone 16 Pro and run a rooted OS of choice. How about that?

Xiaomi released a Poco literally using Mi 17 parts and barely anyone noticed. The dimensions match 1:1, design is extremely similar, the panel makes perfect sense to be exactly the same component. Honestly WTF. Yes, the SoC is a qcom midrange, the cameras are very basic, but it's a rare sight regardless. Extra tidbit: both of these phones either have a 6.35" panel or the official ppi spec on Mi 17 is incorrect. It's very unlikely that X8s would receive smaller bezels in same body. It's also likely an LTPO they're not advertising as one as it'd sound too good for the series.

Fun fact: not once anything written in text on this channel was formulated by an LLM, although I sometimes fear sounding like one. Back when this channel started, I could completely skip the "implications" part for the initial audience, but I'm not mad about it. I'll never try to over explain, as that by itself takes too much time, while lessening the value for people who primarily need concise information. Been there, done that.

Implications: update your browsers and operating systems if you'll be in a risky network, otherwise check whether you own any locked down hardware or software that may not use cert pinning in areas that matter, to make it yours.

Unrelated: EU wants (I don't even have to look up how much set in stone it is, material disrespect of existing right to repair laws doesn't inspire confidence, hence wants) users to have an option to disable auto updates and to be able to install security updates decoupled from functionality.

https://fixupx.com/SebastianvStaa/status/2110278359510859851 Tldr of the whole ordeal if you didn't look it up yet: modified Ledger hardware wallets were silently put on the market, but instead of getting their secrets out to spoof the real thing (very difficult or super mega ultra impossible if you're a TPM cultist), the real thing got a physical implant reading the Ledger's screen contents while the seed phrase is displayed, then uploading it.

Finally, the OpenAI phone!

Things that happen only with Chinese dedication to tech: A simulator of the vision angle cost inflicted by privacy display upon Mi 18 Pro Max, supposedly based on measured data. Not gonna lie, it does feel like an LCD. The only solution would be a pixel density that allows narrow angle pixels to be fully turned off without consequences. https://displaypk.com/viewingangle/

Just in case the COS17 builds happen to be unfriendly to deeptesting enrollment (I don't know that), a downgrade package to 16.0.9.400 is available at https://downgradefs.coloros.com/downgrade/26/07/27/af2624b130b649248abb710023ed1eb8.zip Deeptesting perm obtained on COS16 remains available after update to 17.0.0.107, while OEM unlock toggle visibility and state is preserved in that case. What I need to add is that executing a bootloader lock supposedly results in losing the deeptesting token from oplusreserve1, so you may want to back it up.
