A tax standoff is threatening one of Kenya's flagship electricity access programmes.
More than 1,700 packages of power line hardware, accessories and meter boxes imported for the Last Mile Connectivity Project are at risk of being auctioned by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) after remaining uncleared at the Syokimau Inland Container Depot.
Kenya Power (KPLC) maintains the equipment is tax exempt because it was imported for a government backed, donor funded electrification programme. The utility says the required exemption letter from the National Treasury was submitted, but the goods have still not been released.
If the dispute is not resolved, equipment meant to connect thousands of homes to electricity could be sold at auction over unpaid customs taxes, potentially delaying the rollout of the sixth phase of the Last Mile Connectivity Project.
