Of the over 20 million meteors that are observable every day only one or two reach the surface of Earth.

The mean daytime temperature on the Moon is 107°C, while the mean nighttime temperature is -153°C. The temperature on Venus is a relatively uniform 462°C. The surface temperature on Mercury varies between 466°C on the sunward side and -184°C on the other side. The surface of the Sun has a temperature of about 5,700°C, and the core of the Sun about 15 million °C (although the temperature in the Sun's corona can rise to over 2 million °C).

Every second, the Sun converts about 700 million tons of hydrogen to 695 million tons of helium and 386 billion billion megawatts of energy (see also e=mc2 fact). It's been doing this for about 4.5 billion years and will keep going for another 5 billion years before growing to a red giant and gobbling up the Earth.

The three most recently discovered planets were Uranus in 1781, Neptune in 1846. Pluto, a dwarf-planet was discovered in 1930.

The first man-made object to circle the earth was Sputnik I, launched in 1957.

Some scientists predict that the continent of Asia will break apart millions of years from now, and once this happens, Lake Baikal in Siberia will become a vast ocean. Some geologists believe that in 200 million years the Red Sea will be the same size as the Atlantic Ocean.

The Moon is about 360,000 kilometres away from the Earth (and it is receding from us at a rate of about 4 centimetres a year as its orbit gradually speeds up). The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away from the Earth (sometimes referred to as 1 astronomical unit, or 1 AU).

Comets are small Solar system bodies composed of a mixture of rocks, dust, frozen water, methane, and ammonia.
