Reintroduction of Cheetah in India
As per the MOU between India and Nabia on the cheetah translocation project, eight African cheetahs are set to travel from Namibia to Madhya Pradesh's Kuno Palpur sanctuary. The action plan for the reintroduction of the species was launched at the 19th meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). This was an attempt to reintroduce the big cat to the Indian wild, which was extinct because of habitat loss and poaching. India has been working to relocate the animals since 2020 when the Supreme Court announced that African cheetahs could be introduced in a "carefully chosen location" on an experimental basis.
The Asiatic cheetahs are currently only in Iran. Since the early 1970s, there have been talks between Indian officials and their Iranian counterparts about bringing the cat back to India. But the project never took off, primarily because cheetah numbers in Iran were critically low and the animals were dispersed over thousands of square miles of rugged hinterlands with none in captivity. Only about 7,000 cheetahs remain in the wild worldwide, and the animals are classified as vulnerable species under the IUCN red list of threatened species. Namibia has the world’s largest population of cheetahs.
