🌞 Good morning, students! 📚 It's a brand new day to dive into the fascinating world of science. Did you know that even in the realm of established physics, there are intriguing exceptions? Isaac Newton's "laws" revolutionized the way we understand the world around us, and they still hold true in most cases. However, within our own bodies, there's a phenomenon that appears to defy these laws. Human sperm cells, with their unique blob-like heads and incredibly long tails, challenge the laws of physics just by existing. These tiny swimmers move using their tail, or flagella, in a way that leaves physicists baffled. In theory, the surrounding fluid should dissipate all the energy exerted by the sperm cells, making them stationary. Yet, the elasticity of their shape-shifting flagella allows them to move without losing much energy to the environment. This defiance of Newton's Third Law is known as the 'odd elastic modulus.' This intriguing concept was introduced to the scientific community around 2019, and it's a testament to the mysteries that still exist within the microscopic world. As budding scientists, perhaps one day you'll uncover the precise mechanisms that enable these agile swimmers to defy the laws we hold dear. Exploring this concept could not only help us understand the wonders of evolution but also pave the way for innovative applications, such as soft, elastic robots.
