4. Fast and Secure Unstaking
In most PoS systems, unbonding staked assets can take several weeks. Babylon shortens this process significantly. With the help of timestamping and synchronization between Bitcoin and the PoS chains, users can typically withdraw their staked BTC in just a few days. Bitcoin has long been considered digital gold - a secure, decentralized asset and a reliable store of value. But while the broader blockchain ecosystem has moved forward rapidly, especially with the rise of Proof-of-Stake (PoS) chains, Bitcoin has remained largely separate from these developments. Unlike PoS assets, Bitcoin cannot natively be staked to earn rewards or help secure other networks.
Babylon changes that.
Babylon ($BABY) is a decentralized protocol that allows Bitcoin holders to stake their BTC directly from the Bitcoin blockchain. There is no need for bridges, wrapping, or giving up control. The protocol introduces a new architecture that extends Bitcoin’s security model to PoS chains while creating a way for Bitcoin holders to earn yield.
What is Babylon?
Babylon is a security-sharing protocol that unlocks Bitcoin’s potential as a source of economic security for PoS ecosystems. It enables BTC holders to lock their assets in a self-custodial way and use them to support consensus on PoS blockchains. The Bitcoin stays on the Bitcoin network, while the staking activity happens externally through delegated validators or the user themselves.
This system works without centralized custodians or wrapped tokens. Babylon uses cryptographic tools, Bitcoin’s native scripting, and a coordination layer called Babylon Genesis to enable trustless staking across different PoS chains.
The goal of the Babylon protocol is to enable bitcoin holders to provide security and liquidity to Bitcoin Secured Networks (BSNs) and, in return, get the opportunity to earn validation rewards from those networks.
The underlying breakthrough technology is Bitcoin staking , which enables bitcoin holders to trustlessly lock and use their bitcoins to secure Proof-of-Stake (PoS) chains and rollups.
The Three Facets of Babylon Genesis
Babylon Genesis is a multi-faceted blockchain and we will explore it from three perspectives:
A Bitcoin-secured Layer 1 which uses cutting-edge technologies such as Bitcoin staking and Bitcoin timestamping to leverage Bitcoin security;
A control plane that coordinates the other BSNs with Bitcoin so that they can efficiently receive Bitcoin security and liquidity with minimal integration efforts;
A liquidity hub that manages Bitcoin liquidity through on-chain applications that are secured by Babylon Genesis
How Babylon Works
1. Staking BTC Without Bridges
Babylon allows BTC holders to stake their Bitcoin by locking it through a transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain. This creates a self-custodial vault using Bitcoin’s native scripting language. The BTC never leaves the Bitcoin network and remains fully under the control of the user. It can only be unlocked by the staker, either after a set time or if certain slashing conditions are triggered due to misbehavior.
2. Validating PoS Chains Securely
Once the BTC is staked, the user or a delegated validator can participate in a PoS network’s consensus. Babylon keeps the PoS chains synchronized with Bitcoin by using timestamping - a process where snapshots of the PoS chain’s state are written onto the Bitcoin blockchain. This creates an immutable record and helps enable faster and safer withdrawal of staked assets.
Validators who behave honestly are rewarded. Those who try to cheat, such as by double-signing blocks, face penalties.
3. Security Mechanisms
One of Babylon’s key innovations is the use of Extractable One-Time Signatures (EOTS). If a validator breaks the rules, the system can reveal their private key. This key can then be used to initiate a slashing transaction on Bitcoin, enforcing accountability without the need for smart contracts.
