🔼GOLD TRADING HIGHER ON EASING TREASURY YIELDS AS THE FED CHARTS A SLOWER COURSE FOR RATE CUTS
Gold prices rose early on Tuesday as treasury yields narrowed after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated the central bank is unlikely to repeat last month's 50 basis point cut to interest rates and instead will opt for more gradual cuts.
Gold for December delivery was last seen up US$12.50 to US$2,671.90 per ounce.
In a Monday speech to the National Association for Business Economics, Powell said the Fed is likely to continue lowering interest rates until they reach a neutral stance that does not discourage growth or raise inflation. The comments are being interpreted as a sign there will be 25 basis point cuts at the two remaining meetings of the Fed policy committee this month.
"Powell reduced hopes for another bumper 50 bps rate cut in November, after saying the Fed is not in a rush to cut rates quickly and that if the economy evolves as expected, that will mean two more (25 bps) cuts this year," Saxo Bank noted.
The dollar moved higher early, with the ICE dollar index last seen up 0.38 points to 101.16.
Treasury yields eased, with the U.S. two-year note last seen paying 3.633%, down 1.4 basis points, while the yield on the 10-year note was down 5.0 basis points to 3.737%.
