🔎 A starburst in the middle of an old mole The starburst is the pattern of a Spitz or Reed nevus, and it belongs at the rim of the lesion. In April 2025 the Melanoma Unit in Barcelona reported four cases where it turned up somewhere else: in the centre of an ordinary acquired mole the patient had carried for years. All four were melanoma arising in that nevus. The mole itself gave nothing away. What was new was fine reticulated pigment starting in the middle, with no trauma and no previous removal to explain it. That history matters — a nevus removed incompletely can grow back inside its own scar and look just as alarming. A familiar mole that starts drawing a new pattern from the centre is not a mole I keep watching. I write in English about lesions that do not match the first glance — in the channel. VIEW
