المخطوطات 1 تُعرَّف بأنها كل ما كُتب بخط اليد من نصوص منذ بداية التاريخ البشري، ولا تشمل ما يُطبع بأدوات على الحجارة أو الطين كما في الرُّقم الطينية السومرية، فهذه تُعد من الطباعة. وتكمن أهمية المخطوطة في ندرتها أولًا، وفي أهمية كاتبها ثانيًا، ثم في محتواها أو ما تحويه من رسائل أو كتب أو علم أو أدب ونحو ذلك. علم المخطوطات العربي هو العلم الذي يهتم بدراسة المخطوطات القديمة، ابتداءً من تحليل أنواع مواد الكتابة، والأصباغ، والزخارف، والتذهيب، وأنواع الخطوط، وتنسيق الكتابة، والهوامش، والفهارس، والبيبلوغرافيا، ونسبتها إلى عصورها التاريخية وسياقات استخدامها الزمنية والجغرافية، وصولًا إلى دراسة متن المخطوطة من محتوى كتابي وتثبيت أصالته، ونسبته إلى كاتبه، وتحليله التأريخي والعلمي، وتوثيق ما صح منه وما دخله من النساخين والوراقين، ثم إعادة تحرير نصّه وتنسيقه، وإضافة التنقيط والتشكيل، والهوامش، والفهارس، وانتهاءً بطبعه في كتاب جديد. وقد مرت بهذه العملية سائر الكتب والقصائد والرسائل والنصوص المطبوعة من التراث العربي والإسلامي الموجودة حاليًا في المكتبات.
