يفترق بنسفانجر Binswanger، وغيره من المعالجين الوجوديين، عن فرويد في عديدٍ من النقاط الهامة. منها رفضهم لما ذهب إليه من أنّ المريض النفسي مُسَيَّر بالغرائز والدوافع. فالفرويديون، على حد قول سارتر، قد غاب عنهم ذلك «الكائن الإنساني» الذي تَحدُث له هذه الأشياء.
كذلك يُلقي الوجوديون ظلالًا من الشك على فكرة فرويد عن اللاشعور بوصفه خزانًا للميول والرغبات والدوافع التي تتحكم في السلوك وتوجهه. فهذه النظرة إلى اللاشعور «القبو» cellar تتيح للمريض في الموقف العلاجي أنْ يتنصل من المسؤولية عن أفعاله بعباراتٍ مِن قبيل: «إنّ اللاشعور هو الذي فعلها وليس أنا». ويُصرّ الوجوديون دائمًا على أنْ يُحَمّلوا المريض المسؤولية بأن يسألوه أسئلةً مثل: «لاشعورُ مَن هذا؟!»
