The Story of Maharshi Valmiki and the First Shloka As narrated in the Valmiki Ramayana, one day Maharshi Valmiki went to the banks of the River Tamasa with his disciple Bharadwaja. There, he saw a pair of Krauncha birds enjoying each other's company. Suddenly, a hunter shot the male bird with an arrow. The bird fell to the ground, lifeless, while its companion cried out in anguish. Witnessing this painful scene, Valmiki was deeply moved by the suffering of the female bird. His compassion turned into grief, and grief found expression in words that emerged spontaneously in poetic metre. He uttered: “मा निषाद प्रतिष्ठां त्वमगमः शाश्वतीः समाः। यत्क्रौञ्चमिथुनादेकमवधीः काममोहितम्॥ Meaning: “O hunter, may you find no lasting honour through the ages, for you killed one of a pair of Krauncha birds while they were united in love.” Valmiki then reflected on the verse he had uttered. Its measured rhythm astonished him. In the traditional account, this moment marks the birth of the shloka metre and the beginning of Valmiki's journey as the Adikavi, the First Poet. The moral A moment of compassion gave birth to a verse that has been remembered for generations. The story teaches us that sensitivity to the suffering of others can inspire something greater than ourselves. Greatness is not measured only by what we know or create, but also by how deeply we feel the suffering of others.

“Valmiki’s greatness is not measured merely by the Ramayana he composed. It is seen in how his verses made Rama a symbol of Dharma, Sita a symbol of strength and dignity, Bharata a symbol of sacrifice, Lakshmana a symbol of devotion, and Hanuman a symbol of courage and service. His poetry did not simply tell a story — it shaped ideals for generations.” Remembering Maharshi Valmiki, the Adikavi, on Valmiki Jayanti.🙏

The Story of an Eagle The eagle has the longest lifespan of its species, living up to 70 years. However, to reach this age, the eagle must make a very difficult decision. In its 40th year, the eagle’s long and flexible talons can no longer grasp prey, which serves as food. Its long, sharp beak becomes bent, and its aging, heavy wings—due to thick feathers—stick to its chest, making flight difficult. At this point, the eagle is left with only two options: die or undergo a painful process of change. This transformation lasts for 150 days (5 months). The eagle must fly to a mountaintop and sit on its nest. There, it knocks its beak against a rock until it plucks it out. Afterward, the eagle waits for a new beak to grow back before plucking out its talons. Once its talons have regrown, the eagle begins to remove its old feathers. Finally, after this arduous process, the eagle takes its famous flight of rebirth and lives for an additional 30 years! Why is Change Needed? Change is essential for survival and growth. We, too, must embark on our own change processes. Sometimes, we need to let go of unpleasant memories, negative habits, and fixed mindsets. Only by freeing ourselves from past burdens can we fully embrace the present. If an eagle can make a life-saving and transformative decision at the age of 40, why can’t we? To embark on a new journey ahead, we must release our limiting beliefs and negative thoughts. Open your mind and allow yourself to soar high like an eagle! When it rains, all birds seek shelter; however, the eagle avoids the rain by flying above the clouds. The challenges may be common to all, but it is our attitude toward solving them that makes the difference. Don’t be afraid of change—accept it gracefully!

FOUR BROTHERS LAY DEAD. YUDHISHTHIRA COULD SAVE ONLY ONE. He did not choose Bhima for strength. He did not choose Arjuna for skill. He chose Nakula. Why? Because Kunti still had Yudhishthira alive. Madri, he felt, should also have one surviving son. That single choice reveals the difference between preference and justice. Justice is not choosing who is most useful to us. It is choosing what is fair, even when personal interest says otherwise. “Impartiality is tested when fairness costs us something.”

THE YUDHISHTHIRA–YAKSHA TEST When his brothers lay unconscious beside a lake, Yudhishthira was asked a series of questions by the Yaksha before he could take water. At the end, he was offered the life of only one brother. He did not choose Bhima, his strongest brother. He did not choose Arjuna, his greatest warrior. He chose Nakula. Why? Yudhishthira explained that Kunti already had one surviving son in him. Madri too deserved one surviving son. That answer was not emotional. It was about fairness even when personal interest pointed elsewhere. The deeper lesson: Justice begins when we stop asking, “Who is most useful to me?” and start asking, “What is fair to everyone?” “Impartiality is tested when fairness costs us something.”

THE KARNA DILEMMA Karna knew Duryodhana was often wrong. But Duryodhana was also the man who stood beside him when others insulted him because of his birth. That gratitude became a bond Karna could never fully break. This is why Karna’s story is so powerful. He was not choosing between a friend and an enemy. He was choosing between gratitude and justice. His loyalty was his strength. The same loyalty also became his weakness. A favour received in the past should never become a reason to support what is wrong in the future. Sometimes the hardest test of character is when the person doing wrong is the same person who once helped us. “Gratitude should never silence conscience.”

During the Pandavas’ exile, Yudhishthira found his four brothers lying unconscious near a lake. After answering the Yaksha’s questions, he was given one choice: only one brother could be brought back. He could have chosen Bhima, the strongest. He could have chosen Arjuna, the greatest warrior. But he chose Nakula. Why? Yudhishthira said, in effect, that Kunti still had one son alive in him. Madri too should have one son alive. He did not choose what was most useful to him. He chose what he felt was fair. That choice feels very relevant even today. In life, we often say we believe in fairness, loyalty, honesty and principles. But the real test comes when our own interest is involved. When giving someone else a fair chance costs us something. When supporting the right person gives us no personal benefit. When doing the right thing is less convenient than doing what suits us. That is when values become real. Anyone can choose what is useful. Character is seen when you choose what is right, even when another choice would benefit you more.

The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love - whether we call it friendship or family or romance - is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other's light. Gentle work. Steadfast work. Life-saving work in those moments when life and shame and sorrow occlude our own light from our view, but there is still a clear-eyed loving person to beam it back. In our best moments, we are that person for another. -James Baldwin
