🅾️ Some facts about Millets:
🌾 Climate -resilient crops; can grow on arid lands with mininal inputs and maintenance ; are tolerant or resistant to diseases and pests and are more resilient to climate shocks than other cereals
🌾they can grow in very poor (extreme word) and fertile soils in dryland conditionsand donot heavily deplete soil nutrients
🌾good source of minerals, fibre, antioxidants and proteins; have low glycaemic index ; rich source for iron and are glutem free. Thus they have huge benefits in dealing with malnutrition, management of diseases like diabetes, heart conditions, anaemia as well as climate resilience and nutritional security ✅️
🅾️IYM, 2023 aims to contribute to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly;
👉SDG2 (ZERO HUNGER)
👉SDG3 (Good Health and well being)
👉SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth)
👉SDG 9 (Responsible consumption and production )

⭕️In Kalidasa's 'Abhijnana Shakuntalam' has reference of foxtail millets
🌾Millets were there in Yajur Veda's verses..... Sushruta's Samhita named khudhanya varga included various millets
🪴'Ragi thandheera' - a composition by Purandara Dasa highlighted the importance of finger millet ( ragi ) during his times.....
🌿Kanakdasa personified ragi as the weaker sections of society through his metaphoric creation 'Ramadhanya Charithre'
🍀Kautilya's Arthashastra has also mentioned millets with various properties....
🅾️ Ain-i-Akbari, written by Abul Faxl, records millets and their cultivating regions... It is said that Mughal King Jahangir was fond of 'laziza', a fotlrm of bajra kichdi, mixed with peas which has its roots in Gujarat....
✅️In April, 2018,Millets were rebranded as "NutriCereals", and the year 2018 was declared as the National Year Of Millets
🅾️And now, this year marks the celebration of the International Year of Millets (IYM2023) ✅️
