| 3 | “The Picture of Dorian Gray” — Ivan Albright
Price: $89,000
More than an ugly portrait, this painting seems to rot from within. Albright pushes Dorian Gray to an almost unbearable extreme: a body bearing the cost of eternal youth, with decaying skin and clothes, and a face etched by vice, time, and corruption. Everything Wilde’s novel concealed in a locked room is exposed without mercy.
The work’s power lies in its agonizing precision. Age and decay unfold as a slow, obsessive process; every crease, stain, torn seam, and inflamed patch of skin feels like physical evidence of moral collapse.
Even the room seems infected. Its objects, fabrics, ornaments, and flashes of color extend Dorian’s inner decay.
Albright captures Wilde’s central idea: beauty severed from morality doesn’t simply fade—it becomes nightmare made flesh. This is less an illustration than a tangible embodiment of the novel.

| 13 | “Family Concert” — Jan Steen
Price: $122,000
At first glance, this is a cozy scene of music, laughter, and good company. Look closer, and things feel slightly out of hand.
Steen captured life as lively and unruly. The people sing, play, chat, and flirt: there’s harmony, but also carelessness and a hint of chaos.
The adults are absorbed in music and each other. In the foreground, a boy imitates them awkwardly; his instrument sounds off-key, and its string seems ready to snap. It’s more than a charming detail: Steen hints that imitation without restraint can disrupt harmony.
A dog and cat calmly eating from the same bowl echo the scene’s blurred boundaries. Music, feelings, and behavior mingle.
Steen’s scenes combine domestic warmth with a gentle warning: unchecked pleasure can tip into disorder.

| 16 | “The Interior of the Moulin de la Galette” — Ramon Casas
Price: $51,000
While Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec depicted the Montmartre tavern as a colorful whirl of dancers, Casas chose a somber scene: dim light, cool, nearly monochrome tones, deep shadows and indifferent patrons. Historians see deliberate pessimism, closer to his friend Santiago Rusiñol’s work than to cheerful Impressionism.
In winter 1890, Casas moved into the Moulin de la Galette with Rusiñol and Miquel Utrillo. Their apartment overlooked the dance hall, restaurant, garden and wooden windmill. They explored bohemian Montmartre and wrote about Paris for Barcelona’s La Vanguardia.
Part of a series from Casas’s third Paris stay, this interior debuted at Barcelona’s Sala Parés in 1891 and appeared in a major Paris solo exhibition organized by Utrillo in 1900. A larger version, viewed from the orchestra, is now at the Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges.

| 17 | “America Windows” — Marc Chagall
Price: $308,000
More than a painting, this work is a world shaped by light. Chagall transforms stained glass, changed by sunlight and its surroundings, into vivid color poetry. Deep blue shifts from midnight tones to electric flashes and near-transparency, revealing angels, musicians, birds, city symbols, fantasies, and memories in a stream of images.
Rejecting symmetry and clear order, the composition feels like a dream: figures float, objects drift, and earthly and heavenly worlds mingle. Memory and imagination replace spatial logic.
Chagall’s recurring themes—love, music, flight, the city, biblical scenes, and personal visions—glow with special force in glass. Bringing history, culture, art, and dreams together, the work makes light carry memory.

| 19 | “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, 1884” — Georges Seurat
At first, this painting looks like a simple scene of leisure. Then its perfection starts to feel a little unsettling. People stroll, sit, gaze at the water—but the calm has something almost mechanical about it, as if the whole park were frozen in an oddly precise silence.
That’s Seurat’s strength: he paints more than a walk in the park. He builds an entire world from tiny dots of color. From a distance, it’s a bright, composed scene of Parisian leisure. Up close, it becomes a pure shimmer of color. The painting relies on an optical effect: our eyes blend the dots into light, shadow, figures, and air.
That’s why La Grande Jatte stays with you. It’s more than a famous park—it’s a moment when relaxation turns quietly mysterious.

| 20 | “The Last of England” — Ford Madox Brown
This imagined scene is a kind of self-portrait. Brown portrayed himself and his wife Emma as emigrants, though he never left England. Inspired by his friend, Pre-Raphaelite sculptor Thomas Woolner, who sailed for Australia in 1852 after failing to find recognition, Brown recalled being “in a state of absolute destitution and a little out of his mind” and considering moving to India with his young family. Instead, he painted this work.
The figures are nearly documentary: the man is Brown, the woman Emma, and the tiny hand beneath her cape belongs to their newborn son Oliver, born in 1855, the year the painting was completed. To capture the sea’s diffused light and achieve “truth to nature,” Brown had models pose outdoors in all weather, even winter.
The circular format suggests a telescope’s view of a ship sailing from Dover’s white cliffs. In 2013, the BBC named it Britain’s eighth-favorite painting.
